The play was listened to with : much attention, and several scenes produced- muoh laughter and applause. Mr. Baldwin, as the miser, in, rage and despair at losing bis money, was very good, also tho quarrel between the man-servant, Mr. Cooke, and the steward, Mr. Whetton, each, threatening to >thrust the other; and the scene where the miser's daughter, Elise, a part taken ; by Miss Mead, objects to marry tho man looked out for her by her "father. Mr. -Foster filled well the part of- the miser's open-hand-ed son. Miss M'Diarmid pourtrayed very well the character of Frosine, the go-between, who' makes arrangements for the marriage of the old miser, and a young girl, Marianne, who is in lovo with his son; this part was taken by Miss Hind. Other parts were taken by Messrs. Xattey, Adamson, White, Hegrnbotham, and Hodson. Altogether the reading proved very successful.
