Tho hill is only 300 feet high, but the enemy has collected an enormous amount of artillery there, which commands all the crossings of the brook and canal, NEW TYPE OF GERMAN GUN CAPTURED London, October 9. The Germans abandoned nine Si-inch guns when evacuating the fortified trenches east of Morval. This is the first occasion that this size of gun has been scon. Apparently they are intended for attacks on the "tanks."GERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. \ (Rec. October 10, 5.5 p.m.) London, October 9. A German official communique states"There is artillery and patrol activity south of Ypres and Artois. There is a tremendous battle on the Somme. The enemy, if possible, is increasing his efforts. We inflicted proportionately greater defeats, and have not lost tho smallest seotion of trench. The-Anglo-Frenoh troops assaulted oui line, regardless of losses, between Gueudecourt and Bouchavesnes, but were repulsed every time. We lrnvo destroyed a considerable; number of trenches and mines in tho Argonne. During September wo lost 20 aeroplanes, while the Anglo-French forces lost 129."
