TOMMY ANZAC'S XMAS GIFT FUND

9. SATURDAY'S COLLECTIONS AND SPOUTS THE CITIZENS' EFFORT The Citizens' Fete which was organised by the sports bodies, J'or the purpose of raising funds for Christmas gifts for soldiers, was held on tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Tho afternoon was sunless and grey, but tiierc was 110 rain. However, rain bad fallen in tho morning, and tho uncertainty as to how the day would turn out was a factor against a very largo attendance. In the morning, street collections had been undertaken, and by tho tiuio the sports conunenced at tho Basin jleserve £338 had been handed in. In tho collection, which was taken up chiefly by a number of young ladies, who sold buttonholes, etc., the I'rentham Band and the Highland Pipe Band assisted. Tho Pipo Band raised £G5. On Friday tho hat was passed round among the workers on the waterfront, and £11 16s. was gathered. Tho sports' gathering' was patronised by Their Excellencies tho Earl and Countess of Liverpool. Tho Mayor and Mayoress also wore present. Several bands were in attendance, and there was a big muster of Boy Scouts. During the proceedings, the Scouts, numbering 600, were drawn up in review.order, and the/very handsome flag which tho Boy Scouts of this Dominion are presenting to tho Boy Scouts of Franco was presented to the ■ French Consul (Mr, James. Macintosh) for transmission to' France. Tlie following Boy Scout officers were, present at tho ceromony:—Deputy-Commissioner Hector M'Leod, Provincial Secretary Liout. Cossgrove, District Commanders Collcy, M'Donald, and Mason. Mr. Macintosh acknowledged the gift, and the flag is to be sent forward without delay.

On Saturday afternoon the sum of £101 was collected among members of tho Wellington Bowling Club as a donation towards the Christmas. Gift Fund for Soldiers. This is tho third "opening"' on which this club has mado a handsome contribution to the patriotic funds.

The sum of £14 was subscribed towards tho Christmas Gift Fund for Soldiers on the Victoria Bowling Club's green on Saturday. Mr. L. F. Watkins states that tho total sum realised by. tho street collections was £370 Is. 5d., nu amount far beyond tho expectations of tho committee, ospccially m view of tho weather which prevailed during the morning. It is expected that altogether'from £500 to £600 will augment Tommy Anzac's Christinas Gift Eund as the result of tho various activities.

A striking i'eatiire_of Saturday's procession was a Scottish party mounted on a largo motor-lorry and headed by i four brawny pipers, under Chieftain Alec. Campbell. The lady collectors wero attired in Campbell tartan. Head- I ed by the Trentham Band, under Lieut. For, and mounted on another lorry, . was a concert party, which gave a.! series of popular items, interspersed with short, appropriate speeches by Mr. F. W. Manton, and seelctions by the band. The following contributed an excellent programme: —Misses St. John, Stott, and Mary Cooler, Messrs. Albert Russell, N. Aifckon, It. F. Wood, Goudie, reek, Tucker, and Holloway (accompanist). The two motor-lorries were kindly lent by Messrs. J. Campbell and Co., and the piano by Messrs. C. Bcjrg and Co. About a dozen motorcars, at the disposal of the lady collectors, were lent and' driven by-lead-ing citizens. Tl'.o Sports Programme, Tho sports programme was entertaining. In addition, there was music of several kinds,- Highland dancing, a display of physical exercises by I.M.C.A. pupils, and even Charlie Cliaplin (two ol : him) kindly camo forward to help tho good cause. The hairdressing and hat-trimming competitions created much amusement, and a good deal of interest was taken in the football and hockey matches. The Association football match was the best item on the bill, ! on account of tho clever work and combination of several of the forwards in the winning team. The match was City versus Country Schools. City won by four goals to one. The Country team's play was unscientific, ,and lacked combination. The soldiers' sprint championships were both won by Corpora! L. J. Mailt, Auckland's leading sprinter, who figured in New Zealand amateur championships run in Wellington in prewar days. The Marathon race was cut out, owing to news having been received of the death at the front of l'te. Norman Cummins, last year's fivemile cross-couutry champion and Brooklyn Harriers' champion.
