The weather was iino and the attendance good for tbb second day's racing at Randwick. The going was holding, although much improved. Bee was favourite for tho Metropolitan, but was never prominent. She finished sixth in a record field of thirtj-livft runners. Quuiolog;st was always handy, responding, brilliantly tit tlio distance, and beat tho moie-fancied Polycrates easily. HAWKE'S BAY J.C. SPRING MEETING A GOOD DAY'S RACING. . (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent Hastings, October 7. J'ho publication of heavy casualty lists and a soaking wet afternoon caused a decline in tho attendance at tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting. Tlio racing was quito up to the high standard usually witnessed at this fixture. The totalizator handled .£15,242, as against J317.2D2 for the same day last year. t The newly-appointed secretary (Mr. H. S. Moss) was in charge of tho meeting for the first timo, and had all arrangements well in hand.

Bon Revo was first choice in tho Hack Hurdles, but he was nothing liko as well backed as was expected. In the race 110 was handled in an inartistic manner, and covered far more ground than anything else in the race/ At the six furlongs lie was conceding liis stable companion, Surtax, who was one of the leaders, a very big break, which he had not materially reduced at the half-mile, but in tho long, run round tho homo bend 110 ran up to Kirkby, who had the measure of Surtax, and oneo over tho last fence nothing had a chance with tho Derby winner, who won very easily. Summit and Jem were next to the placed horses. . Nicomar stumbled over tjie last fence and lost his rider, and Tirehau fell at the stand the first time.

For tho Maiden Handicap thcro were 15 runners, the defections being Brodic, Shy Girl, and Bonitas. Hopeito and Te Anum woro equal favourites, and the former, proved the correctness of the Napier form by winning, though only by a narrow margin, from Multum. Sheila and Idyllic showed pace at tho start, and the former led into the straight, hut there sho faded right out of it, and was not in the first half-dozen at tho finish. Tho winner took command a furlong from home, and though Multum challenged strongly tho favourite hold him off, and won by a nock. Pourparler was right up third. To Araroa was fourth, being just clear of bis stable companiou Multivc.

All tho acceptors lined lip for tho Glonaray Handicap. Multiplication was a good favourite, but ho could not act in tho mud, and in the end was rather lucky tn run second, tho winner turning up in Sua Lord, wliq, went to the front at tho start, and practically led throughout. Tho favourite only just beat Stop and Ladogour, who finished in a lino. Watchful and Shy Girl both showed pace at tlio start,- and Hygia was also prominont in tho . middle i>art of . tho raw,

[ but was -well beaton at tho finish. The winner is. good in beavy going, and it was surprising to find Multiplication better backed than bo was on tho machine, as the long striking son of Multifid has repeatedly shown. that bo is not at homo in heavy going. Nothing but tho going boat tbo next favourite Teka in tho Plaxmero Handicap. Ho jumped out well enough, and was running second down the. back, but on the railway bond lie was nearly down twice. Lilydalo was first into , the straight, followed by Teka and Trials, but tho last-named acted best in tho going, and won nicely, whilo the favourite was lucky to run second, being only a bead in front of Honey Bee, who cauio from 1 a long way back. An outsider in Genee was fourth. Considering that tiio winner scored in similar going at Napier last week his price to-day was an extraordinarily good one. Ho is now out of hack class, and will in futuro have to compete in open company. The Hastings Stakos was contested by a goodlooking field of youngsters. No fault could bo found with any of them, but if ono stood out on looks it was Simonides. Tho Demosthenes colt, has groat pace, and left the barrier like an old band, but at the turn for liomo lie ran off the course, and extinguished his chances. This left Astrophol in- charge, but ho was soon tackled by Estland and Crowhurst. Tho latter had come alous very fast after being the last to leavo the barrier, but be failed in the straight. Astrophel and Estland—the Lowry colt was a hot favourite—wore fighting out tho finish when Vagabond came with a, great rattle, and got up in time to win, the first three being in a line, with Bagdad and Crowhurst next. .The winner put in a sensational finish, and looks like being seen to better advantage over a longer course. Ho is owned by Mr. K. S. Williams, and was purchased by Trainer J. H. Jeffered at Ohristchurch last November for 135gns. . Bunting and Haumakaka were missing when tho horses paraded for the Spring Handicap. The New Zealand Cup candidates—Balboa, Multiply, ;and Blackall—all stripped well, and the firstnamed in particular was moro forward than 'was expected. At tho start the top weight jumped out Tvell, but he soon gave way to Hyllus and Atuatoro, and going down the back tbis pair cleared out. Tho remainder were piloted by St. Elrnn and Balboa. On the liomo turn the leaders fell back, and entering the straight Wolcomo Nugget took charge, but at tho distance Balboa challenged bis supremacy, and after a short straggle ho won very, nicely. St. Elmn was a poor third, and tben came Atuatoro, Settler, and. Blackall. The winner does not incur a penalty for the New Zealand Cup, and despite 'his big weight lie is .certain to show up in what is likely to be a weak field. . Bunting "was a good favourite in tbo Waipatu Hack Handicap, and he scored very decisively, while there was a'great finish for the otber places, Hoxton just beating Maraetotara on the post. Toki was ridden by an apprentice, and finished at the tail of the field. Haumakaka was well supported, but failed again. The running of Toki was challenged by Stipendiary Gordon, and an inquiry was held into it. Sea Lord, who bad been successful earlier in the day, Marimba, and Watchful were withdrawn from tho Final Handicap. Marco Bello, a stable companion of Balboa, and Hyginas were the best supported on the machine. At the start Tmo Atua's great pace gave her a big break on tho field, and slio was still showing the way as they turned for borne, but here Hyginas took the van, w-liile Marco Bello also moved up. Hyginas finished full of running, but Marco Bello stopped badly, aiid was beaten out of a place. The Karamu representative scored from Zeus, who came very fast at tlie finish, with Tjno Atiia and Marco Bello next.
