"OUR DAY."
RED CROSS EFFORT BEING ORGANISED. - On Friday evening last a well-at-tended meeting of the "Our Day Red Cross Committee" was held in the Central Depot, i Mercer Street, Mr. T. Young, solicitor, in tho chair. This committee during the next few weeks is out to make things movo on behalf of the thousands of our wounded soldierß and sailors whose names havo filled the casualty lists of recent times. Wellington will be covered by the sign of the Red Cross. The lion, secretary (Mr. D. M'Laren) is busy enrolling recruits, and all men and women who are unfit for service at the war are called upon t'o join .tho army of tho Red Cross _ helpers. Tho Red Cross authorities at Homo havo sent word to New Zealand that much money is' urgently wanted to meet tho needs of the many thousands of sick and wounded soldiers and sailors pouring into tlio hospitals, homes, and shelters of Mother England. That is why it is "Our Day" for tho Red Cross in Wellington. Every man and woman in the city will be called upon to giveras tho lads aro giving "out there"— tor the groat cause of humanity. Much work was done at Friday's meeting. It was decided to thank tho Tramways Union for their co-operation, and invite the union to appoint its own-, sub-committee and carry out its special programme of sorvice. Tho City Council is to be asked to allow the selling of special tickcts on the trams on Red Cross Day. Tho Street Collections Committee reported arrangements well forward, stands fixed, upon, one hundred helpers,enrolled, njore wanted, and offers coming in freely. The direct Appeal Committee reported arrangements completed for sending out 10,000 circulars of appeal, under tho eh'argo of the Women's National Re-'' serve, with other helpers. The Processions Committee reported ...that materials and services were coming- in freely to make Red Cross Day-display unique in the history of Wellington. Tho Military Concert Committee' reported big ilelp from the camps, and much support from artists, Messrs. Lyon, Fuller, and Helliwell wero added to the committee. It was decided to request the City Council to grant tho use of the Basin Reserve for "Our Day," November 3. The Mayor said he could assure the meeting that the council was anxious to do all it reasonal/ly could to help the campaign for Red Cross funds, as they knew such were uracil wanted.
Messrs. T. Young, E. J. Colley, F. W. ltfanton, Jas, M'lntosh, and the secretary were appointed an Inner 'Executive to deal with all matters of urgency. Messrs.) A. Veitcli, F. Holmes, and E. A. Phelps were appointed a Finance, Committee. Arrangements were made for the banking of funds. A Publicity Committee, consisting of Messrs. Veitcli, Manton, Phelps, Holmes, the chairman, and secretary, was appointed. Offers wore made of the use of two motorcars, and the Automobile Club will be asked to help in this direction. It was efceided to take steps towards the holding of three very important meetings. The first will bo a friendly gathering of soldiers' relatives, tile first meeting of the kind ever called in,-Wellington'.'' His' Worship the Mayor will, in the name of the committee, invito tho attendance of the wives, mothers, sisters, and other relatives of our brave soldiers and sailors to meet together and hear something of the great Red Cross movement. Mcsdamcs Hadfield, Corliss, and Rankine-Brown (with power to add) were appointed a committee of supervision. The sccond will bo a midday meeting of business men, called' by the Mayor, at which it is hoped to' meet Mr. Bernard Tripp, who lias been acting as New Zealand's Red Cross Commissioner in England. Tho third will be a great mass meeting in tho Town Hall, at which sound reasons will bo given why the- Red Cross call mw/t at this time ho re-, sponded to. ' The secretary (Mr. D.
