RAILWAY FATALITY AT KAIWARRA
FINDING OF THE CORONER. "On behalf of tho Railway Departniont I am unabie to offer any evidence that will assist the Court in concluding how, or when, tho accident occurred! Tho vehicles on all the evening trains on September 23 have been examined, and no indications havo been found on these which would explain by which train deceased was struok." * The abovo statement was made bj Jlr. E, A. Dawson v stationmaster at Wellington, at the inquest concerning tho death of John William Wilkins, a railway employee who was found killed at Kaiwarra station on the night of September 23. Mr. D. Q, A. €oopor, Ooroner, conducted tho inquiry, and Senior-Sergeant Emerson represented the police. _ Evidence was given by dcoeasod's wife, who stated that she could not account for her husband being on the railway, lino at Kaiwarra on the night in question; ■ '; i A. E. 1 Parkes, engine-driver on the 10.35 pim. .train*'from Wellington to Upper Hutt, gave particulars as to the position of tho body when he found it alpngsido his engine at Kaiwarra. The body was cold, and there was no sign of, life. Witness had no knowledge of how the . accident had happened, but he was perfectly certain that deceased had not been killed by big. train.'.',' .James. Brown, guard on thesamo train, stated that he had no idea how the body got where it was found. Thero were no indications on his train that deceased had been' killed by it. Rqbort Hyßlop, fireman on the train, gave corroborative evidence. Constable Harrison stated that ho had examined tho ground in tho vicinity and ho'had Jound, indications which pointed to tho fact that the body had Moon dragged about 10 yards along towards the platform from . south to north. In witness's opinion deceased had been run over by a train. , ;Mr. E..A. Dawson said that deceased was an industrious and sober man, and he/had undoubtedly been run over, but it was one of those unfortunate accidents ' whioh' could ; not be explained. 1 Tho Coroner's vordiot was: ''That deceased iriet hia death by accidentally being run over, by a train on September 23."T There was no evidonco, said the Coroner", t<o. show .what train (or at what time) deceased was iron over.
