A public duty just now is to think of tlioso soldiers of . outb holding up their end at the front, and those living in E2UG&I r'iiere should seo that everything possible "is done to give them assistance and encouragement and comforts. Thiß can be"*done to .a great extent by the general public by contributing to the Citizens' Christmas Gift Fund either ,ia cash, of poultry, flowera, etc., ( or attending the entertainments arranged by the committee. Hie opportunity afforded, on Saturday next will no doubt bo taken advantage of tiy all those with- a spare shilling or two, as it is hoped to close the fund on that day. The programme to be put on at the Basin Reserve' should attract a large attendance, even apart from the object for which the takings are to be devoted. The Trentham Band is coming in early on Saturday, and will-play at various points in the city before marching to-the Basin. The proprietor of the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel has offered to entertain the members of the band at luncheon at 1.30 p.m.:- - " ,
