MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. L. 6. Rekl dealt with the following cases at the Magistrate's Court yesterday:— . ' Petor Hughes, Joseph Murphy, John M'Kiimon, and Henry Knox wore each lined 10s., in default three days' im-, : prisonment, for insobriety. Peter Levy, while in a stato of drunkenness, used obscene language in a tramcar in Tinakori Itoad. Tho major olfenco cost him a fine of 405., or 14 days' imprisonment, while for drunkenI ness he was fined ss. • William Herbert Bowden was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence wlien called upon, for having committed a grossly indecent act in (ihuzneo Street. Susan M'Laughlin, who was described by Inspector Hendrey as a dangor to the community, and who was also charged in connection with the same offence, was sent to prison for a month. After Charles James Ward had pleaded guilty to being a rogue and a vagabond, His Worship ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. For. refusing to leave the premises of the Alhambra Hotel when requested to do so on Saturday night, Bort Teaguo was fined 10s., in default three days' imprisonment. For resisting a polico constable in the execution of his duty, Teague was fined 205., ordered to pay witnesses' expenses, and make good the damage caused to the constable's helmet. The alternative was fixed at 14 days' imprisonment. Alfred Croft and Herbert M'Kersey were jointly charged with theft from Young's Private Hotel. It is alleged that Croft stole a pair of binoculars and M'Kersey jewellery valued at £3 10s. On the application of tho police a romand was granted till to-morrow, each acoused being allowed bail in his own bond for £25 and a surety for a like amount.
A plea of not guilty was entored by William Webster when charged with stealing two lbs. of tea valued at 35., tho property of tho Wellington-Har-bour Board. It appears that Wobster saw tho tea which had been spilled on the wharf,- and sooner than seo^.it wasted had taken it up. After hearing the evidence His Worship convicted and discharged accused.
Maintenance cases were dealt with as under:—Henry Rupert Frederick Barlow was ordered to pay arrears amounting to £3 within 14 days, or else serve a fortnight in gaol. Bernard M'Kenria, in whose case the arrears totalled £2 10s., was also sentenced to a term of imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if he pays the amount within seven days.
