THE CALL FOR MEN
PROGRESS OF RECRUITING. ■ The attestation ._ of men who had registered for service ' prior' to the introduction of the' new recruiting system is now proceeding at the various reoruiting. oentres throughout New Zealand. More than 4000 men who had registered for service, and either had not been called up or liad failed to respond to a call, were on the books of the Defence Department, and. they are being directed- te report for attestation in small detachments. Date, hour, and place are fixed in the notices sent to the men by the group officers, and men who fail to appear are struck off the. list of voluntary recruits, unless thoy can show good reason- for their failure.
, . The work iuvolves a great deal of 1 labour on the part of the Group offi--1 cars, and it should be understood by a the men concerned that the attestar tion cannot always be completed in a few minutes, or even, in an hour. A fc registered man who receives notice to 1 attend at a Group office for attestation j is really passing through the first stage 7 of mobilisation. He will be paid for , the whole day at Expeditionary Force 3 rates, though the procedure is not 3 h'kelv to ocoupy more than a small part . of the day, and when he leaves the 5 recruiting office be will be a soldier, . with a leave pass in his pocket. A i man who has not been medically ext amined within three months of the P date of attestation will be required to ) undergo a further examination. We have to announce that the second series of 1916 "Studebaker" cars are now on their way to New Zealand, per s.s. Pakeha, from Montreal, due to arrive shortly. These cars come from the Can-, adian assembling- and finishing branch, Walkerville, Ontario ■ and are remarkable for their exceptionally fine finish, necessitated by tho demands of the overseas Studebaker trade. Many valuable ■ detail improvements are incorporated in the second series models, one of the most noteworthy of these being tho provision of independent and separately adjustable front seats of the "bucket" type, together with adjustable pedals. This refinement should, especially appeal to the lady driver or; the exceptionally tall or short man, whose comfort is not adequately provided for by the usual fixed dimensions in the front of the car.- Another important modification is the relegation of the petrol tank to the Tear .of the car, and the provision of a very effi. cient vacuum feed to oarburetter. There are many minor modifications and improvements, all designed to add to the comfort and convenience of both driver and passengers, while in appearance the ear is handsomer than ever. The new 1 Studebalcers will bo on'view at Stude- . baker Agencies shortly, and all interested, < in the-latest developments in American ■ automobile are invited to inspeot | them.
