Tho fortnightly gales of hides and skinswere held yesterday by the various brokers. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, report that competition was keen for all produce offered. Tho high, prices ruling at last sale were wcß maintained. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. report having offered a catalogue of 4GOO skins, 450 hides end oajfskine, besides sundries, to.a large attendance of buyers. Sheepskins were in keen domand, espooially for medium and coarse wools, sound pelted, prices. showing appreciation of up to- Jd. per lb. in coarse wools. Inferior pelted skins also : 6old -at slightly better rafes than last sale. Tho. firm offered a larKe oonsicnmemt of salted skins, which made very high figures, up to 15s. 9d. being paid for salteds, 16s. for green. Hides sold at par to Jd*. lower than last sale, and calfskins showed a decline of fully id. Per lb. on last sale. Tallow was slightly easier, but wo had no good lines .offering. Tho Wairarapa Banners' Co-operative Association, with which is incorporated the ..United Farmers' Co-operative Association, report that a fair catalogue w.as subnutted, and prices obtained were well up to the .average. 6kius and hides were disposed of at practically last ruling rates. Sundry seedy lots of crutohings offered were. not in demand. ■ Messrs. Abraham and William 9 offered a large ca/talogue of all classes of produce. Competition was keen, more especially for -sains which were a farthing dearer than last sale, a line of fine crossbred realising 13d. Included in tho flrm'u catalogue wero 1000 oalfskinß, but the prices wero somewhat easier, so the bulk of them wero held over for next sale. Messrs. Levin and Co. report that only a few fadges of wool wero offered, the wool boms held for tho sales on 'October 13. The sheepskin market was strong. - with an upward tendency. Good sorts of hides were unchanged, and inforior were negleoted. Calfskins were id. to Id. easier. Tallow was firm. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report that only bag wool was offered,- all bale lots being held for next orutching sale on October 13. fairly large catalogues of skins and hides were submitted, sand for all good lines keen competition was forthcinung. For full-woolled skins the : market improved about id. .pej -Jb. - Hides wero at about last. sale's, patea. Fairly largo quantities of calfskins' are now coming forward, aud Sor ; these there is good inquiry. Tho -Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Co:, Ltd., report that their sale passed off vei'y well. Wool is being kept until the October, 13 sale.. Sheepskins were in good demand, &a3 tho offering ' consisted of many good lots o£ light-conditioned ekinß. Compared -with last sale prices wero firm. The, hide market was somewhat irregular, especially for calfskins, -which changed hands ;at priccs. rather in buyers' favour. There-was a good inquiry. for tallow at firm rates. Chrlstchurcli, September 29. Very little business has been' done in wheat towards tho latter end of this week but the market Temains firm. Thero is scarcely anything offering by • growers, and buyers who may bo in want of supplies have usually to go out and seek for tUcm. It is .reported that a little under ss. was offered to a grower for his next season's wheat, but ths offer was not accepted. There is scarcely anything doing in oats, and fecod lines only are in request. There iB practdoally no demand for oataheaf chaff. MONEY MARKET. The Bank of England discount rale was im January 2, 1914, reduced from 5 to 41 tier cent., on January 22 it was reduced to 4 per cent., and on January 28 3 per cent On July 30 the rate was raised to 4 per cent., and on July 31 it was raised to 8 per cent., and on August 1 it was Xurthef advanced to 10 per cent. Qo August 6 the sate was reduced to 6 per cent., on Augußt 7 it was further reduced to 5 per cent., on July 13, 1916, it was raised to 6 per cent OPEN MARKET BATES. TUo open market discount rate for three months' bills is 5 9-16 per cent., as compared with 5 9-16 per cent, last week, and 43 per cent, last year. Short loans are quoted at 5 per cent., as against 5 per cont. last week, • and 4 3-3 per cent. Inst year. COLONIAL' AND OTHER PRODUCE. Butter is very firm.
