THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT

« THOUGHTFULNESS. 'At the end of their maroh througß the city on Monday,' afternoon, the members of the 17th Reinforcements each received a Uttlo gift. The Mayoress, supported by hor husband, Mr. J. P. Luke, together with Mrs. .W. H. S. Moorhouse and a number of' young lady assistants, handed each man as he passed an apple or an orange and a tin of tobacco. A small thing, perhaps, but one of tho little thing? that count for a great deal. A_ kindly net of thoughtfulness which it wag plain from the eager crowding of the men for the gifts and their express sions of thanks was warmly appreciated. One of the secrets of the personal popularity of the 'Mayor and _ Mayoress is the happy 'knack they have of discoveilng little filings to ooi for the comfort and enjoyment of our soldiers, and they never tire in thei doing.. On Monday the supply of tobacco was running short. "John, raid the wifo of our Chief Citizen, "jump into tho car and bring down another, box of tobacco," and in a few minutes ".John", smiling broadly, was back with a huge • case,' which ho proceeded to open witih an axe, much to tho delight of tho waiting troopers. So it is all tlie timo- Mr. and Mrs. Luke are certainly tho hardest-worked Mayor and Mayoress the city has ever had, and they seem to enjoy working 24 hours a day. Wellington is heavily in their debt.
