CATHOLIC FIELD SERVICE
FUND'BEING RAISED. ' Last week His Grace Archbishop Redwood, of Wellington, issued the following circular Jotter to parish priests throughout tho Dominion in connection with ii fund for the prosecution of field service work:— • Rev. Dear Father,— You may be aware that tho Catholic Federation has established a Catholic Field Service Fund, with tho object of providing for the needs' of the Catholic soldiers in camp, on board the transports, and on active- sorvico. It is dosired to have sufficient funds in hand (banked in a soparate and distinct account) to enable the various Catholic chaplains to draw upon the fund either by letter or cablegram for tho needs of tho soldiers under their spiritual care. The method of.tho distribution- of such moneys is left solely to tho discretion of the chaplains. I earnestly, desiro you to bring tho morite of this fund under tho notice of your congregation. It is not my intention to order any special collection to be mride, but, as our peoplo from time to time organise socials, concerts, otc, for religious and patriotic funds, and as many of our schools have had entertainments for such objects, they might bo encouraged to do 6ometfiiDg of tho kind for tho Catholio Field Service Fund. If this course wero followed throughout tho Dominion, a vory substantial sum of money could.be raised for a most worthy and most needful object. All moneys collected or raised in"'the..manner suggested should be sent to tho Treasurer of the Catholic Federation, tho Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., by_ whom they will ho paid into tho special account. I recommend this niattor with all confidence to your zeal and patriotism for'thejwelfare of our Catholic soldiers who aro already at tho front or are preparing to go there. Their heroic conduct in the field already and tho ■unspeakable sacrifices they have made, mo, and will bo making in the noble «ause for which they are striving (human liberty and dignity, the independence of nations great and small, tho rcspeot of justice and morality in tho relations between both nations and individuals) render them worthiest objects of anything which wo. in admiration and gratitude, can do for their service and comfort.
