NOTES AND COMMENTS

!Bi Glescoe.l

. At the sale of thoroughbreds belonging to Mr. S. Woodhill at Wanganui yesterday very poor prices were realised. A mare by Zimmerman from Wangaehu brought the highest price, and at 20 guineas' was sold to Mr. Ons; Campion. Mr. Jas. Bull gave 25 guineas for a Patroiras -two-year-old litem' the same mare, and the Huntervillc owner also secured l a' couple of other lots veifr cheaply. At Wanganui yesterday; four two-year-olds -were tried \over a three-i'urlong course from the barrier. The quartet snowed up well, and left the mark together. The first was Birkondale (Birkenhead—Strathspey) who, ridden by Oliver, ran the distance in 37Jsec. Lingerie (Finland—Finery) -was next, and then came the Linacre colt, and the Maniopoto colt from Gold Cord. After competing at Wanganui on Thursday, Good Hope and Wrestler were entrained the next day. The pair were put aboard the south boat last night, and- will arrive home to-day. ■ .. . The ICaramu horses, Hyettns and Woodlark.i were sent home after, racing the first day at 'Wanganui, as were Harbour Light and Chakwanar ''"' Discussing the merits of Woorak and Sasanof on Wednesday, it was .stated that the Epsom Handicap-would-be run. on October 2. The race .is- to be decided oiv September. 30;' .'■■ The . Wanganui meeting. will be concluded to-day, when goodsiwd fields will again face the barrier. In the opening event" Mia Caro may be a hot order.: The winner and third horse are out of it, and the Fordell mare (who Bhould, be all the. better for the Tace on theopening day).was..weVl clear of the others.. A couple of fresh horses in Avon Park and George will bo' racing to-day, and 6hould acquit themselves well. George, in particular has been responsible for some very smart track work since going, north, and he can be depended upon to' rnn .well to-day : The Tunrwrs in the U-ailway HackHandicap include Splendant, who raced; i l the Guineas on the opening day. TheHymettus gelding will be ridden by 8.Reed, and as bo is a very lieht horse, ho. should do better under the light scale of weights. Others likely to be well backed are Pettier and Sylviaroa. ■■ Golden March, Ost. 41b., has a big will in the weights in the Open Hurdles. The' black horse lias been a. failure so far," but with such a big advantage he mayshow up. Different methods are to be' tried on him to-day. Marton has been very consistent of late in his racing,, but list. 101b. may find him out to-day. Critic and The Hound are both to take, their place iu the fisld, so supporters of the bracket-will have four chances of getting a return on their outlay. With 'track watchers Czaronns (,T. Deerey) is a great favourite, ai in his schooling work over, the big fences ho has done, remarkably well. Square Deal, who! drew- the .outside on. Thursday, and was greatly hampered on the trims, should do a lot better over, a furlong further to-day, as his rider will not lie compelled to hunt him so. much in the early part of the race. Depredation has been raised 121b.. and this may find a weak spot in. such a little fellow, though on the machine he Is likely to be favourite. ;aa he won so. convincingly on Thursday.. • Hylatus -is--] in the Hack' Race as well, but ho will, start in the..hi? ..handicap,, and will be; ridden by A. Reed. - , !'- was" hampered" considerably mi' ■ Thursday, and may do a lot better today in the Moutoua Handicap. So will Biack Heart, whose rider, L. Wilson, was struck by a stono on Thursday, and was blinded for' a part of the race.. Paraoa is in this race, but will probably start in the' Open Mile, in which he.is. expected to run well. Camp Guard.' 16 a likely outsider, though the hard Tace he ■had on the' opening day has likely left its'effect on him.' The field in the Marangai Handicap will bo reduced to five runners. Lady Araai, who showed up well at Martoa, may effect a surprise. The concluding event is tho Hardest task backers have to face during the day. If Gang Awa' is improved by his first race, he should do better to-day, and may go out I favourite. Glorify and Fidelio also shaped well on Thursday. Leonta was scratched for the Brunswick Hurdles at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. The Loafer's name was omitted from' the list of acceptors for the Hack and Hunter's Steeplechase. The trainer of Harbour Light and his rider were nsked to explain the running of tbat gelding in -the big hurdles' on. Thursday. The jockey (Metcalf) who was injured when Abalone fell in tho last race, is making satisfactory improved at the hospital.- — *- In the Spring Handicap B. Deeley, who had tho', mount on Nones, went out' without•& lead bag, but noticed his mistake, and returned to the birdcage and found the bag lying where he had left it.
