GERMAN OFFENSIVE MOVE CHECKED BY THE RUSSIANS
SUCCESSFUL ADVANCE IN THE CARPATHIANS Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. London, September 21. A Russian official communique states:—"An offensive by. the enemy on the Kovel-Rovno railway was everywhere repulsed. We captured a position on the "Panf/yr Mountain, in the Carpathians. TCHERBACHEFF'S ARMY " SURGING ON " ("The Times.") ... London, September 21. Mr. Stanley Wwhburn, writing from Galicia on September 19, states that ■ General Tcherbacheff's army, which has been faced by most difficult country. since the beginning of the great offens ivc, is, now surging on steadily. The total advance from the winter lino is fourteen .miles. Almost uninterrupted fighting since the ehd of August resulted in the capture of 25,000 prisoners, including 8000 Germans, arid'22.guns. At the commencement of the offen- ' sive GoneralTcherbacheff was faced by six Austrian divisions and one German.division. There are now an additional seven Gorman divisions, including one from the Somme, • and two Turkish divisions. The Germans are strenuously trying to hold the Russians, and render the sweeping movements more difficult. The campaign promises to becomo similar to the one on the West front.
