XMAS GIFTS FOR SOLDIERS

,♦ : I TO-MORROWS ARRANGEMENTS. J ' The effort of tlio Mayor and Mayoress to provide Christmas gifts for the soldiers m the trenches was further discussed and arrangements made, at a well-attended meeting bf the Goneral Oommitteo assisting the Citizens' Christmas Gift Fund, at the Town Hall last evening. Mr. C. G. Wilson presided. To-morrow several methods of raising money for the fund will bo brought mto use. During tho parade of .the Seventeen Lit Reinforcements iloivers badges, and silk flags will be sold by ladies of Mesps. Kirkcaldlio and Stains' staff, and of the Mayoress's committee. Iho committee asks that tlie public will buy freely of the flowers, flags, and badges to hoarten the soldiers on tlicir inarch. There is also a football attraction of importance at the Basin Reserve, where two matches will bo played. The poultry and produce schcmo is making good progress, and it is reported that the idea is proving satisfactory. Extensive advertising is to be carried out, and by this means the schcmo will roach tlio farmers who are unaware of its object. Donations will bo carried free of charge if consigned to Townsend and Paul, ami marked "Citizens' Christmas Gilt Fund." Tho collection of empty bottles by school children is of great assistanco to tho fund, and collections aro boing made. Two prizes each of two crickot ba;ts will bo presented tb tho two schools who collect tho greatest number of bottles, and tho children are working hard for the prixes. Tho bats have been donated by Messrs. J. Duthio and Co., and Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co. Tho collection of money, bottlos, poultry, produco, '.etc., will coise on (Saturday, Octobor 7. On October 7 the day will bo set aside as a gala day. Tliero will bo several attractions, and by ending the collections with a gala day it is hoped to add a big sum to tho fund,. On that day a Veterans' Rugby match will bo played at tho Basin Reserve, whon several of tho famous "All Blacks," as well as old representatives will tako part. There will also be a procession of tho Boy Scouts of Wellington, who will carry tho flag they aro presenting to tho Boy Scouts of France. Tho bauds will parado, tho Trentham, Patriotic Society, Pipo and Bugle Bands taking part. Other attractions and liovol items will bo arranged. His Excollcncy tlio Governor and tho Countess of Liverpool have announced''thoir intention of being present.
