THE TURF

——♦ WANGANUI MEETING DEPREDATION WINS SPRING' HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, September 21. There was glorious. weather for the first day's racing. ; Tho totaliaator handled .£21,829, against ,£22,331 last . year. There were no withdrawals from the Flying Handicap. In the birdcage nothing stripped better than Greenstrest and Interlude, but on tho machine Panmnro was favourito, with Chakwana noxt in demand. At the barrier the favour-ite-had tho rails, but he was on his toes and ran back soveral times. Greenstreet broke the barrier twice. The start was a straggling one, Tyson not leaving tho barrier. . Pamnuro and Chakwana jumped out in front, but Interlude soon took charge, and led Chakwana. and Panmure to tlio first bend. Here the last named failed to get round well, and lost his position. Chakwana was in charge before the' straight was reaohed, and ridden oat sHe won by half a length from Mia Cara. The favourite was two lengths away, and then eamo Rangitero and Astor. Intorlude stopped badly.. There was no serious support for anything in the' Maiden Handicap, except tho Chokobore colt Wrestler. Woodlark, who represented tho Karainu stables, was second favourite, and ran a good race, after being unlucky on tho way. At the start Carmel Arch and the favourito wero the quickest to begin, but at the enj of a couple of furlongs Emerson went on-alone, and from this out tho issuo was never in doubt. Tho winner . vros being pulled up as the post was reached. Carmel Arch was well clear of Wapping, who was. handy -the whole way. The Prudent King colt Turangapito was next, and then camo Quinn's Post. The winner hung badly, and seoms little better in this respect than he was last yoar. Wrestler was the only defection from the Guineas field. In tho the candidates on tho whole weTe disappointing. Hyttus bore the appearanco of having done a lot of work, but has not, furnished much, and neither has Cease Fire. Bjorneborg looked empty, and evidently did not travel well. Elation stripped Tcry well, and so did Good Hope. : The. latter Tjas a good favourite, but ran badly, and was in the rear the whole way. At the start Hyttus screwed and lost a lot of ground. Cease Five and Elation led out of the straight from Sweet. Tipperary. Down the back Cone* 1 Eire lost her position, and Elation led Sweet Tipperary into tho straight, with Bjorneborg-handy.' The last named was ridden a nice qniet race by O'Shea, andwhen Elation failed he oame on and won decisively by a length. Splendant was fourth, and then came Good Hope, Cense Fire, and Hyttns. The winner is owned and was bred by Mr. T. H. Lowry, who ■is at present in America. Ho is out of a half-sister to Bnbrikoff, and looks like being a-very useful horse. All started in the Open Hurdles, for which Pursefiller and Crawford were backed in that order. At the start tho pair were badly left, and failed to reach a prominent position at any stage of the rnce. The running throughout was made by 'the AVanganui pair, Vladian and Marton, and at the finish they paid the dividends. Styrnx was a poor ' third, and then came Harbour Light. Lennta fell at tho second hurdle from homo. In the Hack Huddles, there was a great turn-up, the little-fancied Record taking charge at'the last fence, and winning easily from tho well-backed Golden March. Tho favourite, Combustion, showed lip well for about ten furlongs, bnt then compounded badly. Austin was prominent at the last fence, but lift then faded out of it. . Golden March tried to win. all the way, but Record easily, beat him out of it at the finish. The winner was ridden, by A. Gordon for Mr. D. Campion. Tie is a splendid jumper, and should be heard of again. I Gang Awa' was a good favourite in the Putiki Hack Handicap, with Devotion next in demand. At the start the 1 two favourites were slow to move, and 1 Bivouac, Merry Andrew, and Starengo carried on the running to the home turn, < where Gaycium took charge, and, oonfi- ' dently ridden by Goldfinch, she ran home < a winner by a neck from ill e littlefancjed Fidelio, who came with a great > rattle and cut Starengo out of second 1 place. The favourite got a patchy run, and'finished fourth. For tho Spring Handicap Sedd-el-Bahr was' a slightly better favourito than •Square Deal and Depredation. The latter stripped a picture, and so did Nones, Beltane led round the first turn from De- j predation and Marsinah. Down the J back Rewi Poto took second place, but • entering the straight Depredation, who had been on the fenco the whole way, camo fast, and, taking chargo inside tho , distance, ho won nicely from Beltane and Rewi Poto. Sedd-el-Bahr got a bad run, j but -finished fourth, anid then came ■Square Deal, who started on the extreme ; .outside. Ararat came down at the turn into the straight, and G. Young received ' slight concussion. . ' ■ The concluding event - was won by Hylatus, who, with Cleft, was in chargo practically throughout. There was a big field and a lot of bumping tool; . place, Moulu and Rovelenta in particular getting a bad time. Abalone fell and nroko a leg, and his rider, T. Met- ( calfe, was rendered unconscious. Dood also camo down. The winner was sold out V>f the Rar-amu stables in July last, and already he has won two races. By Telegraph—Press Association. FLYING HANDICAP.
