DIED AT TRENTHAM

* The valley was radiant ,with sunshine; gorso in bloom on hillsides and .flat filled the air with its'warm, swoot scent; and tho road that runs from Silverstream to Upper \Hutt,- where it . seems to end at' tho mountains, was busy with rural life. A mob of cattle made moving splashes of colour. A string of circus ponies, being driven to tho next show.town, wero trotting along in Indian file. Some boavy vagdns lumbered along sleopily. A motor appeared in tho distance. It . was black; and, as 1 it drew nearer looked like a. taxi-cftb._ Its hoarse hoot sent tho cattle scattering, tho circus ponies swung aside.and trotted, on the-grassy roadside, tho sleepy-looking wagons were hauled to the left. Tho motor glided past. There was not a sound irom any part of its mechanism. But as it passed so quietly the wayfarers' realised that it was not a. car or a taxi; it was a inotor-hears'a. Through its plate-glass windows they saw a coffin covered with a Qnieti Jack; and though it had passed before they could realise it, heads were bared and. pipes removed. For it was a soldier who had passed them, one who had died at Trentham, and was being borno in nilence to, tbrt graveside at Karon', where 'the chaplain and- firing -party would ho waiting, and thj buglers who play tho "Last' Post" over a fallen ftomrada. .
