THE BIG ITALIAN OFFENSIVE ON THE ISONZO.
A TERRIFIC BOMBARDMENT ENORMOUS LOSSES IN THE AUSTRIAN RANKS Australian-Xow Zealand Cable Association. . (Ree. September 20, 5.20 p.m.) ' Rome, September 19. The Ilafian offensive on tbe Isonzo is proceeding steadily. During tbe first phase of tbe fight, from September 13 to September 16, the Austrians lost two-thirds of their front lino in the Woodiest of encouutcrs. On the second and third days, when the" enemy's reserves arrived, the Fifth Austrian Army Corps, which was countering the Italian. right flank, sustained enormous losses. General Cadorna postponed his offensive for eight days, owing to the heavy rains. The bombardment was so tremendous that the Austrian trenches were reduced to mounds of. pulverised ruins, containing mangled arms and legs. The'attackers frequently found tho'Austrian trenches" full of big, unexploded shells. The Austrian 15-inch guns are now frantically endeavouring to destroy Gorizia and Monfakone. , The Italian hoary batteries are demolishing tho vast caverns and heights behind Gorizia and Trieste, where the Austrian 15-incn guns are sheltering.
