CITIZENS' XMAS GIFT FUND
4 Arrangements are in hand for the Veterans' Rugby match. On a previous occasion this fixture proved a great draw, and as it is expected that several of the famous "Ail Blacks," as weil as many old representatives, will take the field on this occasion, followers of the game shoud roll up in their thousands. A number of other attractions, including several novel items, will be on the programme for October 7 at fho Basin Reserve. Tlio poultry schemo initiated by the Sports Bodies, in conjunction with the Mayoress, should commend itself to those who do not care to send help in cash,' but who have one or two birds of any kind, bo they chiokens, fowls, duoks, turkeys, or geese, to contribute. Country residents are specially asked to note this moans of assisting the fund. Consignments will be delivered at Townsend and Paul's mart free of cost to the sondersi and there offered for salo on special days. The Association fooftall oup filial, to be played on the Basin Reserve next Saturday, is attracting considerable interest. The proceeds are to be devoted to the Christmas Gift Fund, so soocer enthusiasts and the public in genoral should be doubly, encouraged to lend their patronage. The school children, who have already dono suoh excellent service in obtaining'money for thoreliof of the homeless Belgians, are being asked to lend assistanco to this fund. The suggestion is than they collect every bottla (empty) they can discover round the neighbourhood in which they live. Tho bottles are to be deposited at the school which they attend, and later -these will bo delivered to the committee's carriers. "When it is pointed out that every dozen bottles will realise an amount sufficient to provide one of oursoldiers with a small parcel at Christmas time, tho committee feels sure that the schools will give their besE assistance. ■ ;,.'■ The public a*e asked to note that silk flags will be obtainable on tho lino of march when ftto Seventeenths parade, and tho proceeds of tho sale of these will bo devoted to tbo Christmas Gift Fund. The ladies of Messrs. Kirkcaldio and Stains' staff are undertaking tho Eale of flags in the streets. It is hoped that flags will be waved freely to hearten fhe soldiers as they pass by.
