NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBy Giencoe.l The annual liieol.ing- of members of the Wellington Racing Club will be held on Friday, September 29tli. Entries for tlie spring meeting of the Wellington Pacing Club closo at D p.m. on . September 29. Lady Edith, 7st. 81b., was' omitted from the published list of .weights for the Moutere Handicap at the Horowhenua meeting. 1 * Owners are reminded that acceptances for the Horowhenua meeting close on Wednesday evening. B. Deeley will ride It. J. Mason's horses in their Wanjjanui engagements, and the same horseman will pilot the Porirua horses at Otaki. ■ The Bezonian—Snowstell colt, which realised 750gns. in-Sydney, will race as Besant. "Terlinger," in the "Australasian," says people on the other side are looking forward to a meeting botween Woorak and Desert Gold in the All Aged Stakes, one mile, at. the Easter meeting at Randwick, A writer in the Sydney "Refereo" credits JJr. J. P. Reid with having bred Sasaiiof, whoreas that honour .belongs to Air. T. M. Wilford, wlio lias owned the' dam Ukraine since she. was a yearling. J. O'Connoll, who has had no luck in Australia for some time past, rode a, winner at Mentone on September 9, when his mount Golden Rest scored in the hurdle race. F. W. M'Caie, who rode Troublosome to victory in the Adelaido Grand National Steeplechase, is now on his way to .France. According, to reports from Sydney Sasanof is well in the market for the Melbourne Cup, but some writers say it is because of liis good showing in the Chelmsford Stakes -rather than any actual support for tho Martian gelding. A Sydney writer says that Kilboy was finishing on , well at the end of tho Chelmsford Stakes, and his form, suggests that he would be more at homo over one mile and a half. So far no rider has been engaged for Mr. J. B. Reid's colt in the A. J.C. Derby. L. Wilson and C. Emerson were both offered the mount, but had to-decline. 1 Melbourne files to hand record tho death of Mr. W. Menzies, who for many years occupied tho position of handicapper to the Victorian Racing Club. ' Ah interesting fact in connection with Sasanof'6 victory in the Chelmsford Stakes is that tho timo was only a quarter of a second outside tho Australian record, held conjointly by Woorak and Perkeo. A rather unique performance was registered on tho training track at Greenmeadows receptly. F. Davis galloped three of his team, tho riders being L. Gray, S. Lindsay, and G. Cudd, whose total ages reach just . on . 150 years, neither of the trio scaling over 7st. 101b. Few people will agree with tho protest of the country clubs against tho levying of income tax by the Government on all profits made by; the clubs. In these times, of stress, it is necessary that one and all should shoulder the burden, and tho cry that it is a. class tax is puerilo in tho extreme. Somo of the speakers seomed to ovorlook the important part that the taxes are paid by the public, who support racing, and not by the clubs. So far there has not been a single cry from tho general public, who pay cheerfully and look pleasant, and it ill becomes owners and officials to be mak'ui,r protests. The Finance Minister has 6o"far not touched several channels that ho might well look into, such as unclaimed dividends, totalisator fractions, etc. Racing may have to contribute considerably moro than it is now doing before wo sco the end of tho war. Mr. F. Armstrong seems to have got hold of a very useful steeplechaser in Tho Ilound. Judging bv tho way ho 'beat his stable companion Critic in a try-out over the big fences on Saturday, tho Awapuui-trained animal will bo seen to advantage in the Hack and Hunters Steeplechase this week.
