MODERATE LEAGUE
At a meeting yesterday tho o::ecutivo of the New Zealand Moderate League decided to comply with a. request for affiliation from the Truo Tcmporance Association of England, and hopeful that the arrangement will rosult in the leaguo being able to sccuro first-hand information regarding tho various experiments that are now being tried in Great Britain with tho liquor question. The association, which has been established with headquarters in London for some_ six years, has taken an active part in temperance controversy in the Old Country, and has published a number of pamphlets and monographs on this subject, tho. latest being "Alcohol, what it does to us and what ivc ought to do with it," bv Sir Lauder Brunton, Bart., -Ul). ' .
Tho aims' of the iTruo Temperance Association arc: —(1) To create _ a healthy and reasonable publio opinion on tho subject of temperancc in drinking. (2) To encourage the development of tho public house in tho direction of making it in tho best senso a place for the present-day social needs of tho people, and to help in the removal of all legislative hindrances to such developments. (3) To promote fairness, justice, and common sense, in dealing with tho problem of intemperance. (4) To investigate methods for tho further reduction of drunkenness. (5) To assist where expedient existing agencies for reforming drunkards. (6) To promote inquiry into the physiological effects of the component parts of alcoholic beverages. (7) To ascertain what is being, done for the promotion of temperance in other countries. (8) To. assist all efforts for securing tho wholesomencss of beverages.
