LADIES' HOCKEY

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH

MANAWATU V. WELLINGTON

The return match between the above teams was played on the Showground at Palmerston yesterday afternoon heloro a fair attendance. The spectators wero treated to a tine exhibition of hockey, the game being the best ladies' game played this season. The game resulted in favour of the home team by ono goal to nil. The teams wore evenly matched, the homo team being slightly superior in circle play, while the visitors held tho advantage in field work. Prominent among the players in the homo team were Miss M'Swec ney (goal), who repeatedly saved her side from disaster, Miss Birchley (right-full-back), Miss Pcrrin (centreball), Miss I. Kerslake (bully), and Miss Kersel (left-wing). For the visitors tho following were the most noticeable out- of an even- lot: Miss Murphy (right-half) was a host in herself, while the two full-backs played a fine game: these two with Miss Murphy excelled in hitting and placing the ball to their forwards. Miss Wallace (centre-half) played a good steady game, and repeatedly broke up the combination of the opposing forwards. Among the forwards who shone were Misses Mandcr, Israel, and Lang. Their shooting was good, but the defence of the Manawatu goalkeeper proved a stumbling block. In the first spell, from the bully-off Wellington carried play to their opponents' circle, and Miss Lang had a shot at goal, which was well saved by the goal-keeper. Wellington still kept up tho attack, Manawatu having to concede a corner. From a scramble in tho circle Miss Birchley cleared, tho Manawatu forwards carrying ,play well over the half-way line. After somo give-and-take play, -Manawatu attacked, and wero awarded a penalty bully, but no scoro was obtained from it. The rest of tho spell was of an even naturo, both teams attacking in turn. Both goal-keepers showed splendid defenco and relieved v the pressure time after time.

In tho second spell, Manawatu, playing with tho wind, assumed the attack, only to bo repulsed by tho fine defence of tho opposing backs. After a rush by the Wellington forwards, which was stopped by Miss Birchley, Manawatu returned to the attack, and Miss I. Kerslake succeeded in finding the net with a very fino shot, which gave the Wellington custodian no chance. From this out Wellington diß most' of tho attacking, but could not penetrate tho Manawatu defence. The call of time saw Manawatu attacking. The game ended without further score. Mcssrs.T. H. Hodgson and A. W. Manning wero tho referees. The visitors wero hospitably treated by the Manawatu Association, being entertained at lunch and afternoon tea.
