"EXTRAVAGANCE AND SINFUL WASTE."
OHRISTCHURCH PRESBYTERY AND THE WAR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, September 12. The Christchurch .Presbytery to-day passed the following resolution:— "This Presbytery regrets that there is not a fuller acknowledgment of tho nation's dependence upon God as to tho issues of this war,' and deplores the apparent want of any serious senso of the solemnity of the crisis through which our Empire is passing, as manifested in the general extravagance and sinful waste in intemperance and gambling on tho part of very many. It is pained at the; nerveless way in which our National Government has dealt'with tho liquor evil, and: at its callous indifferehco to the waste of national resources in gambling. Whilst rejoicing in tho dafrning success of the Allied arms on all fronts, it is still apparent that tho utmost effort and continued sacrifice are necessary on the part of all to gain a victory that will conserve tho vital interests for which we havo been contending. We therofore urge upon our people the need of giving themselves more persistently to prayer for Divine guidance in the Conduct of tho war,. and for ultimate and decisive victory, exhorting them at home to manifest the spirit of sacrifice 60 nobly set. by onr sons at the front; that leading representatives of other Churches be approached that concerted action at once bo taken with' a view to' impressing tho people with tho necessity for guidance from God, and united and personal prayer for guidance in the conduct of the war and victory."
