CARTERTON NOTES

The Carterton Lady Liverpool Committee has voted £10 towards the fund for Christinas pudding gifts to men at the front, boing organised by Mrs. Luke, Mayoress of Wellington. On Saturday morning, at the Matarawa railway station, a horse attached to a gig, and being driven by Mrs. M. • Waterson, senior, of Matarawa, shied at the approaching train and bolted. The gig was overturned, and the, occupant thrown heavily to the ground. Sho was carried in to tho residence of Mr. J. D. Knowles, where she was made as comfortable as possible till medical aid arrived. Fortunately Mrs. Waterson had no hones broken, and was suffering chiefly from 6liock. The horse kicked itself free from its impedimenta, and careered along tho road for some distance before being caught. The.Anzac League children's ball recently held bore resulted in a net profit of '£50, which has been handed over to the treasurer of the Patriotic Society; Saturday was flower day in Carterton, under the auspices of the Lady Liverpool Committee. Young ladies wero busily engaged selling flowers and sweets to raise funds to provide com- ( forts for soldiers at the front, while dainty afternoon tea was dispensed at the Council Chambers. At the annual meeting of the Carterton Bowling Club, the following officers were elected:—Patron, Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C.; president, Mr. J. Harp; vice-president, Mr. D. Ttcid; treasurer, Mr. A. Bish; secretary, Mr., F. Lindep; auditor, Mr. W. F. Roydhouse; general committee, Messrs. W. T. Masson, W. Whyte, S.'Davies, A. King, 11. Smith,, A. Pink, and E. Smith; (Match Committee, Messrs. Masson, Pink, and Davics; Green Committee, Messrs. W. Fisher and W. F. Itoydhonse; Refreshment Committee, Messrs. King and Roydhouse; centre delegates, Messrs. Harp, Fisher, and A. Phillpotts. The club has -a membership of 87.
