SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION
Tlio last but ono of the . tcachertraining classes was held in the Alicetown Congregational' Church on Saturday night, when Mr. J. Caughloyj M.A., gavo an address. Mr. Caugiiloy spoke on general Sunday school' matters, and his address was full of hints as to ,how tho teachers might make their work more effective. Mr. Caughley said that New Zealand was in the van so far as attendance was concerned, as there was only ono oountry that had more scholars in proportion to population. The churches were not aware of the value to them of the child, and he would like, to see more attention given to school buildings and equipment. Somo churches would spend money on a pipe organ, and starve the school, whereas monoy tpent on schools is the most reproductive of any expenditure. Mr. Caughley said that a good cradle-roll system was one of the. best aids to schools that he know. Visiting was a most necessary part of school work, and should be on a proper basis; it was all right to have our ninety and nine, but wo were also responsible for tho lost one out of the hundred. The connection between the school and the home was one of the things that was often lost sight of, and be would like to see somo scheme in operation in all schools that brought the parents often to tho school. At the conclusion of the address a hearty voto of thanks was accorded to Mr. Caughley, on the motion of the chairman, Mr. Alexander Johnston. The ladies of tho church provided supper for the visitors from town. The last lecture is to bo given in the Petono Presbyterian Church on September 23, by Mr. T. H. Gill, M.A., LL.B.
