MEDICAL INSPECTION OF SCHOOLS

REPORT TO COUNCIL 10F EDUCATION. The committee on medical inspection has presented its report to the General Council of Education, Tho report cmbodies the following recommendations:— 1. That a national system of education should recogiiiso that the bealth and training of tho child from its earliest years should bo tho cavo of tho State. 2. That with a view to economy and efficiency of administration, as well as to securo correlation of effort, all movements dealing with the caro of infant life and training, instruction of mothers and the care of young children, should bo brought under tho supervision of tho health branch of the Education Department. " ;!. That all matters relating to tho bealth of children—including food and clothing—should come within tho scopo of tho work of the'medical inspectors. 4. That in tho, training colleges fuller provision should be mado for the study of child life and the application of physical and mentality tests. 5. That in order to copo with tho doploTablo amount of dental decay in tho caso of children—as evidenced b„v the report of tho medical inspectors—facilities for obtaining treatment should be arranged for. G. That it is highly desirable to provide, for the appointment of nurses who will link up medical inspection with homo training. 7. That-in order to ensure tho development to tho best possible advantage of the boys and girls of this Dominion into Tobust men and women, classes should bo provided for the corrective treatment of all who are. physically subnormal, such classes to be under tho supervision of the 6chool medical officers. S. That special forms of instruction should be provided for backward children wherever possible. ■ 9.. That the medical inspection of school children in the outlying country districts be undertaken as soon as possible, and that all children attending tho schools of tho Dominion be examined medically within a year.
