THE TARARUA HOLIDAY TRIP

Sir,—l had much pleasure in read-, ing the' report of a trip over Mount Hector in winter time. This tourist trip, as you are aware, I have taken much time in fostering, with the aid of my committee. , The "Captain" gave an excellent account of his journey, and I trust tho Tourist Department will make' a note of i\. There is still work to be done, as, for instance, it is absolutely necessary to have a hut erected in the Tauherenikau Valley, where we have only a tent at present, and, as the "Captatn"' says, it is showing signs of "old age." My committee met on Thursday last and found, by the treasurer's statement, that it had a liability to face, in work and material outside tho Government grant, and the members voluntarily agreed to pay £1 each to relievo the pressure. Now, Sir, we are quite willing to keep this enjoyable route open, but it cannot he expected tho committeo can put its hands in its pocket all.tho time.- A resolution was passed authorising a deputation to wait on the general manager of the Tourist Department, and ask for assistance to erect the Tauherenikau hut. This Department generously helped with tho Alpha' whare, for which the committee is very grateful. The rbut-e is becoming so generally used that is is time the Tourist Department took a closer interest in the management. It is now being made a winter trip as well as a summer jaunt. As "the Captain" suggests, the .Otaki people want to take a more lively interest in this route, and wo will have the most pleasant holiday trip within CO miles of tho Empiro City'.—l am, MARK MAXTON. Greylown, September 9, 1916.
