SULPHURIC ACID DRUM BURSTS.
THIRTEEN MEN BURNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, September 7. While some watersiders were handling drums of sulphuric acid on the steamer Monowai to-night one of the drums burst at the bung, throwing the acid in a stream for about 20 feet. Five of the watersiders who were endeavouring to avoid the fumes slipped to tho deck, as did also a number of others who rushed to their assistance. As a result 13 men were burned by the acid, .eight being now inmates of tho hospital, while five were treated as outpatients. The men in hospital were burned about, thn body, five seriously. They include the chief officer of the Monowai (Sir. M'Lean), tlie remainder being watersiders. Mr. M'Lean is not seriously injured. The most seriously injured are Coutts, a single man, and Falkner, who is married.
