MARTON MEETING MAID-O'-GOAVRIE WINS THE HANDICAP.
(By Telegraph—Special- Correspondent.) Marton, September (!. The Marton Spring Meeting, a patriotic fixture this year, v;us held to-day in fine weather. There was a record attendance.. The going was good, and tho totalisator handled JJ17.675. against ,£15,645 last year.
There was a fiold of 12 runners for tho Hack Hurdles, including several maidens, and a few of them did remarkably well, nn<l are likely to gain winning honours later on. Of this number may bo mentioned Combustion (the winner), .Miss Kelly, Janitor, and Consul. Tho lust-named fell to-day, and his rider got caught In tho stirrup, but luckily the horso pulled up. Combustion sot a fast, pace, and led from First Consul, Portland Lady, and Miss Kelly. Tho .leader ran about a lot at the first few fences, but later on settled down. Golden Marc'ui, whb was a good favourite, ran to him six furlongs from homo, but was jumping very high and losing ground. At tho last fence Waimahaki joined in, and after a, great finish was only beaten by a nose. Vladian, who finished fast, was close up, and then came Portland Lady, Golden March, and Miss Kelly in close order. • .There were 18 runners in tho Trial Hack Plat*, and the Karanau colt Hymenaeus was a good favourito, with the Trentham-trained Devotion second in domand. At tho 6tart Lady Edith began smartly, but Birkenetta soon headed her, and led into the straight from Hultaine and Devotion. The latter finished strongly on tho outside, and won nicely from Birkenotta, while Polynesian- was going well In third place. Then enmo Mub taine, Lady Edith, and Rio. Hymcnaeua got a bad run, and eo did Turangapito. First Line, tho Wangamii Guineas candidate, mado a fair showing.
Considering bis previous iorni, it was only right that Marton should bo well backed in the Hack Steeples. Prior to the' start Tauira bolted a couple 'oi rounds, but ho took part in the race and gave ft splendid exhibition of jumping till the double the second time, when he overjumped at the first fence and sot into the next one, falling 'heavily. Tliia loft Marton in front, and after being headed for a bit by Expedition the Wanganui horse came again, and won easily S'rom the" Wavwley hunter. iPolid Mem•ory was third, and Loafer was tho only other to finish. Lady Bibbero, Surtax, Happy Jack, and Segis fell. ■ .. In the big Handicap, Orleans, who did not appear ready, started favourite. Prom a good start .Mnid-o' Gowrie adoptej tho role of pacemaker, and led HylIns round tho top, with Crawford 'bandy. Tho latter and 3laid-o'-Gowrio were out by themselves down the hack, whero Harbour Light and Montnna were promi. nent of tho others. Entering the straight tho Birkenhead mare had charge, and Moulu and Square. Deal were coming, but the Hawera pair held their own, and won all out from Moulu. Square Deal was closb Up, ■ with Master Moutoa and Orleans next. The Hunt .Cup Steeples was a fiasco, all the, well-fancied division coming to grief. Merry Jack had a lead of hiilf a furlong, hut he jumped badly at several fences, and eventually fell heavily. Wai. mate was then left in-front, but he stopped to walking, and tho plugging Wellwood won comfortably after whipping the field for two miles. Lady Eenown foil heavily at tho double, and for a. long time she lay still and Could not be removed.. ; The Fordell candidate, Perrier, was a good favourite in tho Electric Hack Handicap, but he failed to show; up at any stage of the race, and finished nearly last. Starengo was first away, "but Kewa Eewa soon headed him, and led a bunched field to tho turn. Here the Gisborncbred Gayclum came on tho scene, and, disponing of Starengo, she won well. Hy. latus was a head in front of Golden Grafton. Elation ran a fair race, jU6t 'behind .the. place-getters, but on that form can have little chance'in tho Wanganui Guineas." The- winner presented a very rough exterior, and liis supporters got the biggest return of the day. Depredation, who stripped a perfect picture, was a good favourito for tho Railway Handicap, with the Bezonian mare Interlude, Lady Louisa, and Ohiwai backed in that order. Tyson delay, ed tho start considerably, and then got off first, and lod into tho straight from Interlude and Lady Louisa. Then the favourite came fast and took charge, but Ohiwai finished with a strong run and won easily at tho finish. The winner stripped well, sTie and Depredation being the best-conditioned of the runners.
A good favourite in Lady Frisco turned up in tho concluding event, and there was considerable merit in, the win of Mr. G. Soifort's mare, as she started on the extreme outside' and won full ,of running after making up a lot of ground, Detroit, Hygia, and Glorify wero promi. nent in the early stages, hut in tho straight the favourite ran through and won very easily from Rovalonta, who gavo a fair display. Ruatangata just' beat Hygia, aud thou came Glorify and Discussion. DETAILED RESULTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. • HACK HURDLES. One mile and a half. 8 Combustion, Ost. fill). ...
