MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE CASES
Mr. L. G. Rcid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, and heard the following cases:— Arthur Morris appeared on three charges—being drunk, assaulting tho barman of the Albion Hotel, and damaging one bottle of whisky. Inspector Hendrey explained that Morris went into the hotel while intoxicated, and on being refused drink at one bar he went to another, whore the barman, William Gillain, was struck with a whisky bottle. "He was discharged from gaol on Saturday, and appears to have deliberately got into this trouble so as to get back to the gaol," remarked Inspector Hendrey. For being drunk accused was fined 55., in default 48 hours' imprisonment: for the assault ho was fined 40s„ in default 14 days' imprisonment, and for tho damage to the whisky "bottlo ho was convicted and discharger!. A prohibition order was issued against accused, to b'e in force in tho Wellington district, for a period of twelve months. James Condon, for insobriety, was fined 10s., in default three days' imprisonment. For assaulting some person' unknown with a beer bottle he was convicted and discharged, and for assaulting Constable Dudding while in the execution of his duty he was fined 905., in default seven days' imprisonment. ' ' ' / i John William Eoss went into the Panama Hotel on Saturday last and deliberately broko a drinking glass, and trhen remonstrated with by the licensee the latter was assaulted, but ho was not seriously hurt. He was fined 40s. in default 14 days' imprisonment. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. Arthur George Kemp Thompson, alias George Thompson, was charged with being an idle and disorderly personam that he had insufficient lawful means of support. Inspector Hendrey stated that the accused was found in the street in the early hours of tho morning. Ho was hungry and had no money. Accused was sent to gaol for a month, the Magistrate pointing out that it was for the accused's benefit. The gaol surgeon, who had previously seen tho accused, reported that if ho were kept under strict discipline and treated rationally for a time it would give him a chance.
SLY GEOG CHARGES. Robert Porcival Pascoe, Georgo Price, and Albert Weeks, charged with sly grog-selling and "lighthouse" business, appeared yesterday, but the cases were adjourned for a week, bail being fixed in each case in the sum of £25, and one surety of £25. NEIGHBOURS DISAGREE. Mrs. Grace Elvines and Mrs. Georgie applied to hav» Mrs. Maria ,lohns bound over to keep tho peace. The parties live in Thorndoa Quay, and the complaints were to the effect that Mrs. Johns was in the habit of knocking on the wall with a hammer when tho piano was being played in the house of one of the complainants, using insulting language' towards tha children >and the complainants, and otherwise causing annoyance. Mr. E. 0.. Lovvy appeared for complainants, and Mr.'H. F. O'Loary for defendant. The Magistrate said it would bo in- the interest of all parties if the defendant were bound over iiv a sum.of £25 to maintain the peace for a period of six months.
