ARBITRATION COURT

WIiALINGTON SITTINGS OPENED

The .Arbitration Court commenced its Wellington sittings yesterday morning. 1 His Honour Mr. Justice Striogei' presided, jiik! with him sat Mr. \V. Scott, employers' representative, antr Mr. J. A. M'Cullough, workers' representative. In regard to the Wellington Butchers' dispute, the agent for the -union informed \he Court that the union would not accept the agreement drafted by the Conciliation Council. The hearing of the ca6e was fixed for Wednesday nest. The CouPt' declined to add as parties to the'' Painting and Decorating Trades Award the Wellington Meat Export Co., Ltd., and the Gear Meat Co., Ltd. ; 'jhese firms, it waa explained, employed their own staff of painters for fepir own work, but as they were noi 'jn any way ill competition with thd Irade, they objected to be joined as parties to the award. It was announced that a complete agreement had been reached in • the section of the jjirewers and bottlers' dispute affecting browories, and an award was made",to rive the agreement binding force accprjmgly. . There was some discussion in regard to a clause in dispute affecting -the aerated waters trades. The union claimed double time for men required to start work at 6 a.m. to assist ' carters making early deliveries. The Court heard Mr. Cornwall for the union, and Mr. Gronfell for the employer*, and reserved decision on the point. On the application oi Mr. D. Kennedy the firms of F. Femby,' W. E. Godber, H. Haise, and J. W. Wallace and Co. were added to tiio Wellington District Furniture Workers' Award. In the case of the Marine Engineers' Award, the adding of certain parties was sought, and a claim'for exemption was made by tho Aiichor Shipping and Foundry Company ajid the Canterbury Steamship Company in respect of the vessels Calm vid Regulus. His Honour referred tip the recent agreement between tlie 'Institute and the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., and said that jt seemed hardlj> fair to try and join others who had not had a chauoe of being beard in the inoitor. The Court held that the companies sought to be joined could not roasonr ably be added to the award. ' Having made several fixtures for next week Hie Court adjourned until 10 a.m. on Monday.
