MAGISTRATE'S COURT
'POLICE CASES. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yeeterday. Only one person appeared charged with insobriety, a middle-aged man, named Samuel Sparkes. ■ Ho was fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Allan. M'Phee, convicted of a breacli of his prohibition order on August 11, was fined £2, costs 75., in default 14 days' imprisonment. James Grant, charged with having refused to quit the New Zealander Hotel when ordered to do so by the licensee, was convicted and fined £1, cofcts lis., iu default three days' imprisonment. Tlie offence occurred on June 19.
Henry I'rancis' Christopher Hoskings admitted indecent conduct in'Courtenay Place, and was fined 405., in default 14 days' imprisonment. Harry Phipps, who had used some abominably obscene language in, Vivian Street, was sent to gaol for a month. No option of a fine was given. The man had previously been convicted on several occasions.
'John O'Connor, for theft of a suit of clothes from the establishment of A.' Dimdore, and of au overcoat from some person unknown, was sent to gaol for a month on each charge.
Charles Garnett, a seaman 011 the Waiwera, was charged that 011 August 20, at Bluff, he disobeyed the orders of an officer'of tho ship. He denied the offence, but he was convicted, and sentenced to two days' imprisonment, with the . proviso that he be put on board his 6hip before the time of sailing.
William Roberts, for deserting from the s.s. Durham, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, and the Magistrate ordered that he also be put on board his ship at Auckland before the date of sailing. Albert Edward M'Kinley, aged 16 years, was charged with being unruly at a parade of Cadets. His conduct amounted to mild insubordination. The Magistrate admonished the boy, and ordered him to pay 15s. costs.
A number of by-law cases were dealt with. Cecil Roberta, charged' with driving a- motor-cycle at night without a light, was convicted and discharged. Herbert Stanbridge and Walter Margin, for driving motor-cars at night without lights, were each fined 10s.. and costs 7s. Hans Scott was fined £1, and costs 75., for driving a motor lorry after dark without lights. William H. Baldwin, Stanley Fryer, William Butler, and David Andrews wore all convicted on charges of allowing cattle to stray. Andrews was X 1 victcd and discharged, and' the era were fined in small amounts. '
