VALUABLE WORK

Not enough is.known here-of'the very admirable work which" is being done in.London by the members of. the. New Zealand War"Contingent Association. . This, organisation was created. by a number of ladies and gentlemen to look afterthe New Zealand sick and wounded; in England. It keeps in touch with every sick and wounded man, and lady-visitors see that every man is properly, looked After..' One gentle--' man who'lately left here -for E'ng-' land has written to sav how much he is'impressed with the organisation and good work this body is : do-', ing," and points out. that the $&r'. Contingent Association is'reallv the-'. New Zealand Red Cross. As it is right that New Zealanders should look after their own men first, it has been arranged that all Red Cross goods should be sent .to the New Zealand stores in Southampton. These stores arc under the charge' of Captain Greene, who., has already rendered such valuable service men in the East. Any. goods not wanted by our men will be handed over to the British Red Cross. Lord Plunket is chairman of the- executive of the .War ,'ConS" tingent Association, and on the committee are Sik Thoma? 'Mackenzie, CcExVEral Richardson,-' Mr. Jajies Co'ATES'j'Mr. Elgar, Sir J..'Mills, Mr. ; D'ouglas ' M-Leak, Mr.' "John Grigg, and ' many" others, and Messrs. Waldegrave, Wray, ])als-/ ton, and Raymond are actingas secretaries. ; These gentlemen aye giving up their whole time to the work, and the admirable results achieved, are...largely .due-to . their efforts., Every month, the association is extending its operations,. and it ..has' been, suggested that it would be;- a' good--thing if in--/the .-.future; allgoods and moneys for/our men' in England -or:•.•■ Franc- were/: sent through the association. Tho public give more freely when they know the personnel of the body administering the- funds. Moneys collected for Red Cross purposes might also be sent to the association w.ith instructions that any sums not wanted for our own men or our own hospitals should be available for the British Red Cross. -When it is remembered that"wo-"'"will' probably have over 9000 sick and. wounded in England, it will be evident that the War Contingent Association will' want most of the goods and moneys which Now Zealand can supply for" our own w|en. In addition to looking after the-sick and wounded, the association is doing valuable work in looking after the men. on fur? ■ lough." They arc met whether they arrive during day or night; are taken to the hostel or the club, and are assisted in every possible way. This saves the men much expense, and assists them to avoid many temptations'. Needless to say, the men.greatly appreciate/the kind-ness-shown them, and the assistance given. Elsewhere will be found an extract from an interesting letter, written by Lord Plunket to a member of the-'Advisory Board of the War Relief Societies, which shows the importance of the work the War Contingent Association is undertaking, '..and. .. should serve to stimulate efforts of those who arc in a position to help forward this valuable, work in the interests of our soldiers in England.
