DISCHARGED SOLDIERS ON THE LAND

PROGRESS REPORT. . At the Land Board meeting yesterday tho following progress report was submitted regarding the settlement of discharged, soldiers on the land:— Since tho first allotment was made on January 27, 1916, sixty-eight discharged soldiers . have been granted sections of land in the Wellington landjdistrict. Of these, five have decia«r tor various reasons not to proceed with the occupation of their sections, but the greater proportion of the remaining 63, who are located in different portions of the district, have, made good progress, as the following resume shows:— Between Taumarunui and Owhango, on iTie Main Trunk railway, sixteen are occupying milled bush sections, and of these five have built houses, three have let contracts for bushfelling, and others are preparing to get bush down this, season. Eight selections have been made in the block of virgin bush country near the Wanganui River, and of these two are camped on their sections felling bush, and three others are about to make a start.

JTwo sections near Raetihi are occupies, bushfelling is in progress; one of them is partly cleared, 'and is being stocEwl with , sheep. One section near Waverley is being fenced, and in the meantime the selector is working at his trade. On tho six farms of grassed land near iUanwweka, on the Main Trunkrailway, three are already dairying, and two are making preparations for dairying; cows havo been purchased, ono dwelling is completed, and .two others are iii course of erection. One settler is going in for .grazing cattle, and some have beon purcnased for him. With anything like reasonable icaro and good work these men will do well. On ten grazing farms near Ohingaiti, also oil the Main Trunk railway, seven are working on their sections,> living in tents, or in wliares ' near at hand. Splendid progress has been made in fencing, cutting posts, and clearing scrub. Ono is not long out of hospital, "but is mending, and-.will soon be on his section; the other two are making preparations for felling and fenciug. Wire has already been supplied to somo of these settlers. In the Huangarua- and Wainuiorudistricts, cast of Martinborough, seven ■settlers"are located; two have been in occupation ' for some months, arid -stSSXed their farms; four of the remainder are fencing and. preparing to build ready to , take up residence. These sections.will he used for grazing sheep aiid cattle, but consequent upon the high price of jitock, the: settlers have been well advised to let the grazing until January next.--' _ Two _ settlers are fencing their sections in Tne Hall-Jones Settlement, near »Lower Hutt, and making arrangements for the erection of dwellings.. , .Two settlers on bush sections'in the Gorge Survey District, near Woodville, have commenced felling, and the remaining ono is about to follow them. Another settler in the Fuketoi district is' felling bush and rosiding with *is Tirother on adjoining land.
