FRENCH CLUB
. Two interesting addresses wero given at the French Club's meeting on Wednesday evening. The (subject, "Current Events," was dealt with by Mrs. Seville and by Madame Bendall. The war itself, tho actual fighting, was not touched on, but both addresses dealt with matters connected with the war. Mrs. Seville spoke of tho effect the war would be likely to have on ourselves. Sho quoted the opinion of another lady to the effect that when our men returned from tho war _we should find many bringing back wivee with them, and so tending to restoro tho'balance between the sexes, for both here and in Australia there was a largo preponderance of men before the war. Sho said it appeared from the letters received from our soldjors in France that they greatly admired both Franco itself and tho French woineii. She thought it probable that many of our men would bring back French wives, and that this would deeply influence lifo and literature here lin the future. Tho lecturer also dealt with a Paris expression of opinion on English women. It. commended them for being practical and determined.. When the Suffragettes wanted the vote they set to work smashing windows. Now that there is a time of stress tliey sot to work in munition factories, and had not scrupled to put on man's attire.in order to work in safety. So, says the writer,- there is no longer a weaker sex. Madame Bondall also dealt with matters as seen from a French point of view._ Sho read a French account of Lord Kitchener, as a public man ancT in privato life. She also read a. poem .dealing in a touching manner with the soldiers who have fallen. Both ladies were listened to with great interest, aiul a very hearty'voto of thanks was passed for tlioir addresses.
