DISCHARGED SOLDIERS
THE INFORMATION DEPARTMENT. Tho following progress statement of the work of the Kscharged Soldiers' Information Department, as at August 26, is made available by the Minister in charge (tho Hon. A. li. Herdman):— Total number of men on register(a) Disposed, of 3889; (b) imdtV action, 1042; (c) not ready for action (including men returned by recent transports), 439; total, 6370. Particulars showing how cases dealt with:—(A) Cases dispAed of:— (a) Left New Zealand, Of cannot ascertain address, 134; (b) re-onliste<l or returned'to military duty, or have work to return to, etc., 1532; (e) men wlio have signed, "assistance not required," 95G; (d) mea. placed in employment, 931; (e) mem who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work the Department found for them, but failed to start work, 203'; (f) men who have drawn sections of land, 133; total 3889. (B) Cases under action:—(a) Reports upon cases not yet retifrned by officers mnltinp; inquiries, 197; (b) awaiting further advice (chiefly men who liaTe stated that they are not yet desirous of work), 505; (c) at present on employment wanted register, 340; total, 1042. (C) Cases not ready for action:—Men recently returned to New Zealand, now convalescing, not ready for employment, and not yet discharged by the military authorities, 439; grand total, 5370. Employment is wanted in Wellington as follows:— outdoor work, 1; light work, 1; married 'coujjle (man gardener or farm work, and wife governess), 1.
