LAWN TENNIS
The quarterly meeting of tlic council of tho New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association wa.s hold last evening. - Mr. 11. M. Gore presided, and there were present also Messrs. Barry ICeesing (representing Auckland), M. F. Instone (Canterbury), I l '. i". Grady,mi. (Mawke's Bay), I'. Thomson (Marlborough), H. C. Murray (Otago), G. I'\ Smythe (Southland), M. E. ton (Taranaki), \Y. Melody (Wanganui), A. G. HendoiEon, and 1). If. Kean (Wellington). , Tho chairman moved tho adoption of the quarterly report (already published). Mr. Kcasing, referring to the report's refercnco to tho fact that the Management Committee was in communication with headmasters of boys' colleges with r. view to considering the advisability of holding a championship tournament. ' lli' said that many of the olil players had been lost, and the association should make an effort to encourage the boys (j fill the gaps. Mr. AY. Melody said Hint it would 'in better to encourage the primary scholars than, the eollcge boys. Wellington C'ollp?e, for 0110 tiling, discouraged tennis. It was remarked that Wellington College and Christ's College (Canterbury) had replied to the communications, and their replies were not favourable to the proposals. The matter was then dropped, and the report was'adopted. Subsequently. Mr. Melody moved that a recommendation ho made to the Management Committee to consider tho question of a pnblic schools tournament, ns distinct from a secondary schools tournament. Mr. Kcesiug seconded the motion, which was carried.
