EDUCATION BOARD
THEMONTHLV MEETING. The monthly meeting.of the Wellington Education Board (now including Marlborough) was held yesterday. There were present: Tho Hon. J. G. W. Aitken (chairman),. Messrs. W. Allan, 1£ A. Wright, M.P., W., H. Field, M.P., T. Forsyth, A. W. Hogg, T. Moss, E. P. ltishworth, G. London, E. H. Penny, A. Mackay, and J. KebbeH. In reference to the admission of free pupils to secondary schools, the chairman stated that tlicy had written tothe College Board of Governors in reference to the admission of' paying pupils to Wellington Girls' College while accommodation was not being found for all free place pupils. A reply had now been received that advertising for paying pupils had now ceased. Junior pupils (paying) were accommodated only in rooms that.could not be used for secondary work. This, the chairman said,- be bad seen for himself.
A communication iva's received from the City Council regarding the sanitation of the City schools. . 'i'lio secretary prosented a report which was in effect an analysis of the reports of committees' on this- point. The effect of it was that cleaning was being regularly carried out in the City schools, aiid /that provision was made for periodic disinfection. At the instance of the Director of Education ifc was decided that teachcrs should bo asked to give such assistance, as it was possible for tliem to give in the clerical and other work incidental to the bringing into operation of tho Military Service Act. It was decided that the schools should close oil .Dominion Day, September 25.
A petition' was received from tho residents of Ruarulniputuna, near Maryborough, for a new school. The request was referred to the Inspector for report. j The secretary reported ' that • 70 schools had taken advantago of the recent offer of the board to supply shelter trees or hedge plants. Tho:Finance Committee reported that tho balanco in hand was £1061. Tho receipts had been £14,180, and tho payments £13,530. Tho following resignations were accepted:—Miss E. Kidston, probationer, Mount Cook Girls' School; Miss L. Keebld, probationer, Brooklyn; Miss N. Burbu-sli, assistant, Levin; Miss 0. Clifford, assistant, Rongokokako; Miss F.. Ellis, resignation from Parkvale School staff, not from board's service.
It was reported that the following teachers were going on military service Expeditionary Forces, Mr. A. A. Clifford, pupil teacher, Mount Cook Boys' School; Mr. F. J. Gaze, assist nrifc, Maranui. Y.M.C.A. organiser, Mr. C. H. E. Strack, assistant, Pet-one.
