P. Quinlivafi. Saaanof may be good, but lie does not give the impression l of being up to Derby form. «3hrill is a wellgrown English-bred filly, and in appearance, outclasses Mr. Stead's other importation, C'Jieloma. No doubt Eligible will be a competitor at Tattersall'e meeting ou September 9." '

In another place tho same writer says:—"The New Zealand trainer, M. Hobbs, is rig lit out of luck with the horses he owns, Corrie having broken down, badly, and Deltonio and Peg being temporarily out of work owing to lameness. Fortunately, there is nothing wrong with either Silent Way, Reval, or ICilboy, three horses in ownership other than his. Silent Way, however, ia unlucky in having worked up to a high position in the weights without winning, and has probably reached a mark from which it will be difficult to improve upon anything ho has dono since his arrival in Sydney." : J. Childs, who won the Derby and Oaks on Pifinella, appealed at Newmarket in June against tho short period of exemption from army service allowed him by the local tribunal, and was granted an extension until the end of the racing season in the terms of his contract.
