THE WEST COAST LIBEL ACTION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, August 26. The Supreme Court was occupied for two days hearing a West Coast libelaction, in which the plaintiff, Ernest James Smith, draper, of Greymouth, claimed £lf)0 damages from William WKay, draper, of Greymouth, .on account of a malicious, anonymous letter alleged to have'been written by the defendant, concerning the plaintiff, to Mr. Christopher Smith,/ cf We'.ingfon, managing director of C. Smith, Limited, of which firm plaintiff is manager of tho Greymouth branch. After ■ three hours' retirement tha jury returned, and His Honour remarked that the necessary timo having elapsed ho was ready to accept a three-fourths agreement. The foreman announced that there was no likelihood of their agreeing at- all, and, with the consent of both parties, the jifry was discharged, and the case ordered to stand over till next session.
