TWO DESPERATE ATTEMPTS FRUSTRATED
HEAVY LOSSES INFLICTED BY THE BRITISH Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. London, August 23. Sir, Douglas Haig reports':—"We repulsed'two determined attacks south of Thiepval. Tho German losses wero heavy. The Germans, in their counter-attack in tho evening southward of I'hiopval, gained/a footing in our new trenches. They were immediately driven out. We completely repulsed a second determined counter-attack at midnight. The Germans are bombarding High Wood and Bazentiu-le-Petit."
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S. REPORT.
The High Commissioner reports;—
London, August 23, 11.20 p.m. ' The British official report says:—"South of Thiepval we gained a further 200 yards of German trenches, straightened our line, and improved our position. The enemy's -artillery 1 has • been silenced in' three different areas by our heavy guns. " "On Tuesday evening, enemy's aircraft wcro satisfactorily engaged in. large numbers. Four were destroyed, and many others were either brought down or pursued to aerodromes." THREE DAYS' DESPERATE FIGHTING AT GUILLEMONT. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. '■'■'. (Rec. ' A British patrol made ■ its way into ,tho village of Martinpuich, which is at our-mercy."
SHARP FIGHTING ON THE FRENCH FRONT

A French official communique states: —"A heavy artillery duel lasted all night north and south of Mawepas. Tho Germans; after an intense artillery preparation, attacked southwards of Estrees and westward of Soyecourt, and penetrated the trenches we had conquered at some pomta. A Russian General has said that if ;wo could hold 122 German divisions'on the. Western front Russia would bo satisfied. She would look after the rest. We have, done this." THE MYSTERY OF VON MACKENSEN.
Berne, August 23. The "Allgemeino Zeitung" denies that von Mackensen is on the West front,-and states that he is commanding the armies against the Salonika positions.
