The Port Nicholson, formerly Makarcna, is due in Auckland from New York about the end of this week, and should arrive here on September 1. She has a- general cargo to land at Wellington.

A large sum or money wag £pent to put the vessel ill fit condition to carry on work. Although under water, the ship wan in cxcollent order; tlio top part had to be practically rebuilt, nnd after coining out of (lock she is a firstdass hulk. Originally it was, proposed to 6Pnd (ho liuJl; to Auckland, but now it lias been decided to keep her here, and in place sfcnd the hulk Klinor Vcriwn. which will be towed lo Auckland in about thTec weeks. CACIQUE LEAVING FRIDAY. The American steamer Cacique, which bae been busy since Monday unloading cargo by means of lighters, is expected to finish unloading by Frida.y morning, and will sail for Sydney direct on Friday afternoon. Her Wellington cargo .amounted to £858 tons, which included 218 motor con in pieces, nnd a large amount of benzine. She will take no cargo away from Now Zealand. HATTiK LTJCKWiBAOH DUE NEXT MONTH, The llattie Luckonbach. which left New York for New Zealand, via Panama, on July 27, is expected to arrive in Auckland during the first week in Scptcmher, and should arrive here about September 12. She is expected to take about 42' days to do the trip to Auckland. As the manifests have not arrived, it is not- ascertainable what her cargo will be. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. "Captain 0. Roberts was seized with on agonising malady, and died at. the early aga of 38. Ho sustained, the best traditions of his profession. His last effort ns shipmaster, and that w'hen . suffering greatly, was to bring his boat alongside the wharf, and, seeing it tied up, he. exclaimed, like Kelson: "Thank God, I have done ray duty.' The cargo steamer Kaikoura, froin. Montreal, arrived at Auckland yesterday having come via- Panama Canal. She will discharge 1600 tons «t Auckland, and is due here in abost ft week's time.

The Defender has been bar-bound at Koktika for frai« days, but is exnected to arrive, in Wellington about Sunday.
