DANNEVIRKE MEETING
STEEPLECHASE WON BY LADY BIBBERO.
By Telegraph.— Bpeoiol Correspondent, Dannevlrke, August 23. Tho Dannevirko Steeplechase Meeting opened in boisterous weather;' The course was.soft and tho attendance small. There were numerous falls during the day, but none wero serious. The totalisator'handled -£12,663, against .£12,594 on tho opening day Inst year. . .There wore 17 runners .in , tho Trial Stakes, for which Rio, Stop,, arid Bayawator were the best backed. The lastnamed began smartly and was soon showing the way to Lady Edith, Royal Park, Rio and Stop. They finished in this order, OUvor's mount securing the verdict by a nock, with Royal Park half a length away. The winner was formerly owned by Mr. A. B. Williams, but some time ago ho'was.sold out of tho stable to a patron of J. C, Jamieson's stables at Opaki. -.' ■■'•'.'.' For the Hack Hurdles, Bon Rev©, Ormesby, Conziska, and-'Jenr wero baoked in that order. Mount .Victoria got left at the barrier, but afterwards jumped two fences and landed on top of the third, injuring Traill's hand. Ormesby and Bon Reve wero out in front when the! Trentham hor6o fell at the second fenoe,. and Hymen came down over him, while Conziska narrowly escaped trouble. Waimahako then joined Bon Reve, and Keynote took charge of tho others. Bon Reve. was done with three furlongs from home, where Jem rushed through and won' easily from Kirkby and Keynote.. Bon Reve would have been second, but in going for a gap at the last fence, he was knocked on the post of the hurdle. The. public correctly anticipated the Spring Handicap result when tho first .and second.favourites filled the places. .They, were Ohiwai, who goes well in soft going, and' Master Achilles, who only suffered defeat by. a head. Zeus was close up third, and then came Botanist and Multiplication. The latter seemed unable to act in tho mud. Montana got a bad bump on the bend and was nearly down. Botanist made the early running from Zeus, but at the bottom of the straight' the two favourites appeared and left-the. others standing. There was a field of nine for tho big Steeples,"Wirokino, Moochor, and Keynoto being the defections. Marton stripped, well, and was made a good favourite. At-'tne first fence Segis and Surtax fell, and the double saw Kew run oif and Marton followed • him. This left Pond Memory with a good lead, but he turned over at the back, and Kirkby came down on top-of him. Bandalero then took up the Tunning from Lady Bibbero and Silver Monarch, but the last-named was fencing badly, and was lucky to stand up . Lady '.habere went to the front a mile from home, and jumping beautifully sho won by twenty lengths from Bandalero. Silver Monarch. was tho only other horse to finish. 'A. dozen runners lined up for the TJmutaOroa Hack Handicap. It was a good race for five furlongs, but then Trials dashed out' and placed four lengths between himself and Pinisterro by .the. time the post was reached. Shield and .Foeman made the running from a bunched field' till tho straight was reached, when the Foxton horse was in trouble. Half-way down the straight .Gold Shot was in charge, but then Trials dashed out and won easily. Golden Glade, the third horse, got a bad passage early in the piece, but finished on well. Bairnsdale was fourth and Gold Shot next.
Eleven was tho main in the Hunters' Steeples, in which falls came early and ia.te. At<the finish Lady Benown, who gave a faultless exhibition of jumping, .won in- a 'trot from Alraadale-. and Meltua. .These were the only ones to .complete the course.. The winner is a very useful mare in 'this class, hut Almadale, who is by Paddy's Land, will see.-a : better day. E. Edwards, rider of Peach;Pie,-was badly shaken, hut the other, riders escaped injury..
- •:-Haraetotara-(S. lipid) was at a very -short price for :the Hack, Welter .Handicap, but-after Jumping-.'out well:, and having ; every chance, she faded, in the ■straight and was' beaten into fourth place.' Tho winner, turned up.in the consistent- Atuatora, who stripped very well. l No'lault could be found, with the condition-of the favourite. The only excuse" can be the heavy going.. Tho.run-ner-up was Ruatangate, who is not nearly ready yet, and will be a much improved horse next timo out. Rio, who was. saddled up again,- ran a good, honest race, finishing third.
"Orleans, Los Angelos, and Amical were withdrawn from the Otanga Handicap, leaving eleven runners. Goldenlyto (Oliver), St. Oinor (Hanson), and Rumnnia (W. Bell) were backed in that order, but of the trio the last-named •was tho only one to get a .place. . At "the" jump off Merrie Gain and Kuiuania were just clear of Bon Reve and barring the Hastings horse, who lost hi 6 place on tho top, the leading.positions, were un. ohanged throughout the race,. Merrie Gain, at the finish, winning very easily from Rumania, while Bunting- just, beat •Haumakaka for tbird place. DETAILED RESULTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. TRIAL STAKES.
