WRECKED RANGATIRA'S CARGO
CONCERNING A: SALVAGE CHARGE. ■ By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedln, August 22. The Chamber of Commerce further considered this morning tho unique position which has arisen since the landing of the wreoked Rangatira's cargo at Dunedin from the Waiwera, in which the shipping company seeks to collect a levy (salvage charges) from consignees amounting to 50 per cent, on the valuo of the goods landed, instead of, as usual, upon the invoice valuo and freight, plus 10 per cent. Importers here hold that the marine insurance policy is an absolute indemnity, and that all',the charges a consignee might be compelled to pay to get possession of the goods are payable by the company to the amount of the policy. The insurance companies maintain that importers are joined with them to the extent of the increased value of the goods so far as salvage i charges are concerned. The chief point I is.whether the consignee has to become joint insurer for the difference in value. The chamber will issue a manifesto later based on legal opinion. r
