WHOSE WARNINGS FELL ON DEAF EARS

THE LATE'LORD ROBERTS GRIM VINDICATION Australian-Sow Zealand Cable Association. (Rec. August 22, 8.35 p.m.) London, August 21. An assemblage of thirty thousand people witnessed the unveiling of the equestrian statue of the late Earl Roberts by his daughter (Countess Roberts), at Glasgow. The Earl of Derby (Under-Secretary of State for War) delivered an eulogium. He said that they could not overlook the fact that Lord Roberts had been treated with scorn by many who should have known better. He had preached tho lesson they were now learning. If they had learned it earlier it would have saved the lives of thousands of men, and tho expenditure of millions of pounds. Sir Douglas Haig telegraphed: 'Tor many years Lord Roberts had seen this war coining, and had laboured unceasingly to awaken his countrymen, who must now feel a pong of regret that this gallant old soldier had not bopn spared to see how splendidly the British people had risen to the occasion, and how, through many tribulations, we wore steadily bringing this terrible war to a triumphant end."
