PRISONERS OF WAR

_— —. — COMFORTS FOR NEW ZISALANDERS CAPTURED. In Juno last, Britr.-Gon. Richardson, Commandant N.Z.E.F. in England, wroto to tho Minister of Defence (tho Hon. J. Allen) stating that "in view of tho possibility of our having prisoners of war ill Germany, in tho future, I investigated tho question of relief, in the form of food, money, and comforts. I ravo ascertained that while thoro are a number of organisations in England for tho purpose, there is no co-ordina-tion. . . . Hero is' an opportunity for tho -War Contingent Association tn do good work. I suggest that a small narcol of food and a little money should bo sent to each prisoner every week, and that, tho New Zealand Government, if necessary, reimburse the War Contingent Association. This matter, I consider, is urgent and essential." On August 14 the Hon. _J. 'Allen cabled to tho High Commissioner in London"Please arrange for food, money, and comforts for relief of New Zealand prisoners of war in Germany. Pood will be paid for by Now Zealand, money being guaranteed bv New Zealand Government for time being. Suggest comforts might be provided from comforts often held by you or New Zealand War Contingent Association. Consult General Richardson and advice what you supply." On August 17 tho High Commissioner cabled in reply:—"lmmediately was aware New Zealand Prisoners were in Germany consulted with General Richprdscn, and food and comforts were distributed to all. Arranging with War Office to supply the monoy." ;
