THE TURF

THE GRAND NATIONAL

MEETING

ART WINS HURDLES

QUEEN'S POST SCORES IN THE STEEPLES

By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.)

Christchurch, August 17. For the second day of the Grand National Meeting the weather was fine and the attendance His Excellency the Governor was again present. The totalizator handled .1:43,213 lOs., an increase of .£1362 10s. over the corresponding day last year.

There was some mild excitement over the result of the first race. Pyjaina was a hot order, and after a good finish ho appeared to fail to overhaul Caraid Dileas, but the judge hoisted the favourite's number, and. tliere was a hostile demonstration from the crowd. From the Press stand it certainly appeared as if Caraid Dileasliad won. Treadfire was a poor third. Counterpoint broke down in the race. The winner was bought in after the race for 51 guineas. Rolling Tide and Otupai were the public choice in the Hunt Club Cup, in which there were many spills. Korangi, Rolling Tide, and' Tariki made the early running, but at the sod wall the firstnamed came down. At the double Otupai and Mawson were the leaders, but Traditor was coming, fast, and taking charge approaching the last fenoe he won from Mawson, with Tariki and Otupai next. Debonaire refused at the first fence, and Northern, Fairy Finn, Rolling Tide, Sellirook, and Dear Annie fell/ Waiparapara broke down. Kukri was the best supported in the Sumner Handicap, for whichi Maid-o'-Gowrie was withdrawn. At the start Ballyhar piloted the field, tho most prominent of the others being Sister Regis, Multum, and Sir Tarka. Entering the straight,' Achilleus shot out and led' till well down the running, where King Siar took charge and won decisively. Fiery C'ross, Sir Tarka, and Moneymaker fini ished in that order. The Vinner was I piloted' by Emerson, who ,was having his I first ride sincc his return from Australia;

'I'lic August Handicap went- to Scadown, who was neglected on the machine, but ns usual he showed his best form on the straight six on this course, and won. in the most, decisive ' manner from Oxeiiliope and Cherry Blossom. When the field came into the course Ijroper, Derby' Day, Cherry Blossom, and Speedometer were in the lead, but Oxenhopo then ranged up and appeared to be winning. Over the last bit he was challenged by Seadown, and the Welling-ton-owned horse, finishing as true as steel, won very decisively. Derby Day, Comely,' Rorke's Drift, and Battle' Eve were the next to the placed horses. As was anticipated, Crown Pearl was withdrawn from tho Grand National Hurdles. Lconta, ICooya, Crib, and Master Regal were preferred on . the machine, in that" order. All thp contestants saddled up well, and a very fine race resulted. After a couple of false starts Mr. Wood got the Held awßy to a capital start, except Kooya, who was left standing. At the start Master Regs 1 and Golden March took' up the role of pacemakers, and led the field to tho stand.. All we're jumping well, but tho pace strung out- the field, which was whipped by lconta.. .Going past Cutts's Kilmeny and Art word prominent In behind the leaders. Down tho-back the positions were "unchanged, and Master Regal and Golden March were still leading the way passing Yaldhurst. Master Regal jumpe4 tho last fence just clear of Art, Kilmeny, and PursefiTler. In the run home Art and Master Regal fought out a. brilliant finish, and as in tlie Junipers' .Flat Handicap tho little fellow prevailed in the last pinch.! Sir Solo, who had come from well behind, was third, and then came Marconi (who was giving the leaders a big break at one part), Harbour Light, and Kilmeny, both of whom ran sterlWg races, and Pursefiller, who was prominent throughout. The prominent failures "were Crib and Tararu Jack.

The Beaufort Steeples wont to an outsider in.- Queen's IJost, who-set . a fast pace, 1 and led throughout. Waimai gave a. great exhibition of jumping, and pulled himself to the front ten furlongs from home, but he bumped his rider off at the sod wall, and this left Queen's Post with Ja good lead, which the " others wero unable to overtake. New York ran a good race throughout, and flashed second after having a life at the fence which brought him 'down on the first day. Lady Bibbero-just beat Idealism for third place.. Recharge, Nita, and Black Sea were the next to finish.- Wirokino and Sam Pan wero tailed off the .whole way. Oratonu, Bravest, and Kaupokonui fell. Banian, Sleight-of-Hand, and the Val-lance-ow'ned bracket were all evenly backed in the Spreydon Hurdles, and after a good finish Mr. F. Armstrong's horee scored decisively' from Baniat>, wEo will do better next' time. The bracketed 'pair were the next to finish. Worcester fell at tho first fence and gavo L. Henderson a heavy fall. £ Gold Soult. Sedd el Bahr. and Reform wero backed in that order for the Islington Handicap, and the favourite won /with his head in his chest. At the start Meltchikoff led from Sedd el Bahr and Slogan,- but in the straight the favourite came fast and won on the bit.
