MR. G. H. SMITH RETURNED

Tho olection to fill the vacant' seat in the House of Representatives caused b.v tho Heath of Mr. J. H. Escott took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr. Ci. 11. Smith, tho nominco of tho National Government., who has a, majority of 83 over his closest opponent, Mr. R. B. Boss. Tho total votes polled numbered 3200, as against a total poll of 5043 votes when Mr. Escott was returned at tho last general oleotion. A Press Association telegram received from Pahiatua last evening gives tho result as under:— G. H. Smith 1521 R. B. Ross 1438 G. D. MacFarlane ...... 241 Hie above, tho message added, was tho final result. The -voting at the last general election was as follows:— . J. H. Escott (RJ' 2872 J. E. Mathews (0.) ...... 2171 Reform majority 701.
