DOMESTIC WORKERS
During July tlie Women's Employment Branch of the Labour Department, Wellington, dealt with 157 applications from employers, and 71 applications from workers. Workers placed numbered 65,. 39 of whom were dify workers. Of these 29 were married, and 3G single women or widows. Thero were 49 dependants.- All came from, the North Island, and 23 had been previously assisted. The officer-in-cliarge of the branch states:—"lfc would save much disappointment to omployers if they would bear in mind that "all applications lapse on the 20th ofeach month, and have to be renewed if .the applicants are stillunsnited. It would also save me much inconvent l once if they would notify me when they suit Oiiemsclves elsewhere. Owing to the.scarcity of domestic workers a very farge number of engagements aro made by the day workers. lam rung up all day long by employers to know the namo and address ,of the woman who works for them, or to send her a message, giving her less than twenty-four hours' notice that she will not be required the next day. This shows great inconsideration for the workers, : as with such short notice I am often unable to replace them; thus a day is lost to them. T find I make many more engagements than 1 register, owing to having received no notification from either side that an engagement has been entered into."
