HOW LABOUR FARES

JULY REPORT. "Trade and labour conditions," states the report of the Labour Department (Wellington branch) for July, "have, • on the whole, remained satisfactory, although the continued wet weather has interfered to a considerable extent with outdoor work. The building trades are still keeping •busy, and several considerable sized contracts are in progress. A good deal of difficulty has been experienced in getting some lines of building materials, but, notwithstanding this, good tradesmen havo. been much iri demand in the different branches of the trade. Engineering- trades are also keeping busy, but here again there 's a. scarcity of materials and men. Clothing trades on the whole havo been busy, with the oxcoption of ordertailoring and dressmaking. Retailers report that they continue to do satisfactory business. "During the month 177 applicants for employment registered their names, as compared with 226 for the previous period. Of these . 108 were placed, 85! in private positions, and 26 were sent to Government works. There were 35 married men and 73 single men, with. 100 dependants. Those assisted comprised carpenters, farm hands, hotel workers, and general labourers. Thevcame from the following placesNortli Island 26, South Island 22, Commonwealth 7, Great Britain' 49, elsewhere' 4. In addition, three wives and two children were assisfcd to join their relatives.
